I honestly hate these “theories” because while it’s partially true I’m as left as it gets and I hate septum piercings. I’m not gonna shame anyone for getting one I just personally hate them and hate how prevalent they’ve become.

I don’t mind most piercings and have several tattoos myself but there’s like 4 types of piercings and tattoo placements that just put me off. Doesn’t mean I’m a fuckin pedophile.

The definition does say they dislike women with septum piercings, not the piercings themselves. So you’re good. I don’t like piercings in general. I was forced as a child to get my ears pierced three times and I’m still resentful.

But others can stick whatever they like in their bodies.

Other than being left, this is the biggest difference between you and the people the theory is referring to. Everyone is allowed their preferences and unless you’re commenting on people with septum piercings there’s nothing wrong with not liking them.

I used to dislike them. I think that was just because they were unfamiliar. But, I’ve seen many people with them now, and I think sometimes they even look nice.

I like piercings better than tattoos. Except for the extreme ones, like gauges through cheeks, etc.

At first when I read your comment, I thought you were referring to studs in the cheek, which I have actually found kind of attractive at times so I was a bit confused why you said extreme. Then I reread.

        Cheek gauges??? Wow. That’s wild.

I have no meaningful opinion on them. However, now that I think about it the people I know who do have them tend to be attractive to me. That said, I don’t think it’s at all contingent upon the septum ring itself.

          • Depends on why they don’t like it.

I just don’t like piercings in general, because, well, it pierces skin. It’s like needles, which I too dislike, except this is permanent/long term.

Some women love that feeling of the piercings on their body. Not the getting snagged part, but how it might feel rubbing against their shirt or pants. That’s why they get those piercings. If you don’t like that feeling, don’t get one.

Pretty simple to just… not get one instead of casually insulting people who do.

Did we change the definition of ‘literally’?

          F. Scott Fitzgerald did it (“He literally glowed”). So did James Joyce (“Lily, the caretaker’s daughter, was literally run off her feet”), W. M. Thackeray (“I literally blazed with wit”), Charlotte Brontë (“she took me to herself, and proceeded literally to suffocate me with her unrestrained spirits”) and others of their ilk.

But the fact that Charles Dickens used literally in a figurative sense (“‘Lift him out,’ said Squeers, after he had literally feasted his eyes, in silence, upon the culprit”) doesn’t stop readers from complaining about our definition. We define literally in two senses:

          1. in a literal sense or manner : actually
          2. in effect : virtually

Some of our readers are not happy about this. Here are a few of the comments left at this entry:

Definition 2: the dictionary is literally wrong.

This is literally the stupidest thing I’ve ever read.

          I literally can’t even.

Some people choose not to leave such comments on our site (perhaps they do not wish to hurt our feelings), but still want to make their displeasure clear. These people comment on other forums, as in this sample taken from a comment thread on dailykos.com:

Considering that Merriam-Webster has redefined “literally” to mean “figuratively,” I’m going with literally.

Our poor language, I’m figuratively about to hurl.

Agreed! How you you [sic] agree to accept (I’m looking at you craven dictionary editors!) a word that means the exact opposite? It’s unfathomably stupid.

Never trust anything but the OED…

It’s fine to trust the OED, but you might want to check their definition first:

literally, adv. 1c. colloq. Used to indicate that some (freq. conventional) metaphorical or hyperbolical expression is to be taken in the strongest admissible sense: “virtually, as good as”; (also) “completely, utterly, absolutely.” —Oxford English Dictionary, 3rd edition, Sept. 2011

Aaargh! That doesn’t seem very literal at all! The dark forces of “figurative-literalism” must have gotten to them, perhaps by blackmailing the editors. Let’s look at how some other current dictionaries define this word.

literally, adv. … 3.b. Used as an intensive before a figurative expression. The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 5th edition, 2016

literally, adverb … 2. (intensifier) ⇒ there were literally thousands of people —Collins English Dictionary

Literally every modern dictionary includes a definition for the metaphoric or intensifying sense of the word literally. Why do we hate the English language so?

          We don’t.

y’all ain’t been around cattle. you put one of those rings in the bull’s nose. then you add links to the chain depending on how nice it is. if it’s real nice, it doesn’t need extra rings. if it’s a mean old bull what’ll charge you as soon as it sees you, that 30 foot chain’ll slow it down a titch, and maybe if’n you’re lucky you can sneak up and hook it to a post so it can’t get you.

a woman with a septum piercing is kind. les’n she got herself a 30 foot chain attached to it

The Septum Ring Theory is the social observation and slang that finds a pattern between women who wear septum piercing and a certain set of personality traits like being chronically online and holding exaggerated leftist views.

It’s frequently used as an insult in comments of sexist / misandrist women who try to disguise their hate as “wokeness” or social justice.

There’s an alternative definition that was later created by people that felt called out by this slang that claims it’s the theory that some men dislike women with septum piercing because you need to be over 18 to legally obtain it.

Yeah I can see why the theory in the OP came about if it was used to attack women in this way before.

Well, as usual, vagueness is a great shield and a good platform to radicalise people.

Obviously, a collective of people will place the marker for “exaggerated leftist views” on different places. So you will see all kind of markers.

But as usual, the propaganda material is selected, so the misogynist will look for misandrists (or a supercut that create the impression of misandry) with the “social justice warrior” optics (obviously, we are talking about the distorted perception of sjw present in misogynistic circles)

Obviously the views of people (or the distorted version created by a supercut) tend to be quite outrageous, as it should be for “good” propaganda. Then calling these views leftist, makes the propaganda work. As now, unaware people will confirm that the views are leftist, as they assume that is what it is about. when in reality, the seemingly misandrist view is obviously not leftist, as misandry is sexism.

I don’t have a single piercing in my body but as someone who has had a very high number of injuries, cuts, bruises and other painful events the question always forms: why?

Piercings are only painful for a temporary time. People don’t get them for the pain, they get them for how they look.

I’m always injuring myself in some way or another. Piercing is pain that I choose. I like the aesthetic as well. The rush one gets after the needle goes through is quite something.

Because I like how mine look. Also there definitely is a body mod masochism, thanks to the endorphin rush associated

Laws for piercings and tattoos vary widely by state, in the U.S. Some states allow anything with a signed parent or guardian consent form. That doesn’t mean you could find an artist to do the procedure, but legally, it could happen.

I dislike septum peircings because I just think of it going back and forth while rubbing on bone. Kind of like nails on chalk board except in my nose.

If a septum piercing is done correctly (and you have average anatomy), it shouldn’t be very painful and doesn’t touch any bone/hard cartilage because there’s what’s called a “sweet spot” inside your nose underneath the hard cartilage that’s thin and soft that the piercing should go through.
