Recorded human history doesn’t go back 10’000 years. It’s closer to 5000 years.

As a non-native English speaker I sometimes struggle with those words added after verbs: off, on, up, down, etc.

What words come from Celtic languages? I thought it was all Germanic with Latin and French words being borrowed later.

As a French-speaker, it has always been my instinctual understanding from seeing the word and knowing how English has taken words from Latin and French.

English-speakers are really unlucky to have one of the most ambiguous word for situations where the need for clarity is of such great importance, especially as it concerns safety, even saving lives.

I did say “democratically choose”, not merely “vote”. Russia does “votes” but isn’t really democratic.

I had no idea this was a thing. So strange, and somewhat unsettling.

Do we have evidence that Israel funds AIPAC?

As far as I know, and that we are aware of, it didn’t happen since the early 1960s, with AZC, an ancestor organization.

Do states having a right to exist means people can’t democratically choose to merge their country with another?

I just thought about this now, but any alternate history that explores tech in the Middle-Ages would count as medieval sci-fi. For example, the Eastern Romans building on the ancient Greek technologies and experiments and using Greek fire, concentrated mirror beams, calculators and steam engines.

And all those bad things happened, and more.

But we forgot that when it’s about a dictator’s grip on power being on the line, none of that matters. It’s all about the dictator’s grip on power.

The Chinese invented the Chinese ideograms.

The script-less Japanese adopted them, but they didn’t fit their language well on their own. So, they created hiragana (a syllabary) to be able to properly write their own language. A Japanese sentence typically comprises Chinese ideograms and hiragana.

Later, both the People’s Republic of China and Japan simplified their ideograms, but not in the same way, and the Chinese went much further.

So, now, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao use the traditional hanzi.

Japan uses their kanji, somewhat simplified.

And the PRC, Malaysia and Singapore use the simplified hanzi.

South Korea uses hanja which is virtually the same as traditional hanzi. And North Korea completely abandonned the Chinese ideograms.

In Chinese, they’re “hanzi”.

Or you can just say “Chinese ideograms”

There are many false friends between French and English. Off the top of my head:

• EN: eventually (FR: un jour)
• FR: éventuellement (EN: possibly)

• EN: actually (FR: en fait)
• FR: actuellement (EN: currently)

“Enregistrer” in French both means to record or register something and to save a file, but you can’t use the English word “register” for both.

“Défense” in French both means defense and prohibited, but you can’t use the English “defense” for both.

I have ADHD (actually diagnosed, in childhood) and coffee doesn’t put me to sleep, much to the contrary. A little amount wakes me properly.

There are different types of ADHD so it might be why.
