  • It’s like that argument math teachers used to make, right? “You won’t always have a calculator in your pocket!” Except, yes. And if you had a job that required a calculator you would own a couple to take with you, and you would become proficient in the maths anyway even if you used the calculator because you’re doing it so frequently. And when do you ever need to solve maths under pressure, how rare is that.

But teachers wanted you to be capable of doing the job without a calculator because they had this imagining that you had zero knowledge of how to do a maths, if you used a calculator.

But you have to know how to do the sum to enter it into the calculator. It’s just useless busywork for busyworks sake, not using a tool that speeds up an unnecessarily time consuming job.

They made electric mixers, does that mean you should always beat cake mix by hand just in case you have an emergency cake making need?

You know the job so well you built a program capable of doing the job, and your manager is worried you don’t know how to do the job, instead of seeing that you are actually improving your time management, and making the job more efficient and less error prone. All humans are prone to error, that should be a universal understanding.

Sit your manager down and get them to use the program and then ask them or tell them how it works, explain the mechanics and how to build it. Explain time saving and efficiency.

I’m glad you’re quitting this manager thinks you’re incapable in the face of huge evidence otherwise. What a dick!

The second part, where neurodivergent folks do follow rules and get angry when others don’t, is the flip side of the coin where neurotypicals don’t follow rules that they consider not really that important. They know the rules, they know why, they just think the consequences aren’t that bad, or they don’t feel the consequences or pure ego. Why is it pathologised when neurodivergent people don’t follow rules, but when neurotypicals do it, its fine. Then neurodivergent people are pathologised for noticing neurotypicals don’t follow rules. But when neurotypicals notice neurodivergent folk not following rules, not pathologised.

Sorry for the meaningless rant. I haven’t had a coffee yet. Better go fix that. Eta: ok I’ve just had one sip, but now I’ve got more for the meaningless rant…

Why is it described as “if neurodivergent don’t fully understand a rule” and not “when neurotypicals poor communication skills don’t explain rules properly, whole swathes of people fail to follow the rule, because of said communication issue”

  • Wow, me too, the family thing. I admire your ability to step back from it. I keep trying to fix what’s happening with mine. Currently my mother is at retirement age, has huge mobility issues but considers herself above collecting any government money (pension). She only has 30k in superannuation and plans to withdraw that entirely to do over her kitchen, in one go. And that’s not even scratching the surface of the crazy.

  • I agree that more needs to be done. Problem is saying more needs to be done, doesn’t achieve anything. What needs to be done? If you look right now, what’s available in your area to actively do, that’s also within your capabilities and constraints presented to you by every day life. Saying people need to do more is as ineffective (if not more so) than people supposedly not doing enough. Not doing enough of what? What should they be doing specifically? Which are the best sites to follow for collective action? What actions can you get behind to make the most impact that’s within your personal available capacity. Because they’ve made it hard to act, on purpose. If you’re scrabbling for the next dollar to eat and survive, and without that scrabble, you can’t survive, risking that dollar isn’t bettering the environment, it just means you can’t survive right now. And the effect of poverty is such. They’re monopolising and demonising places to collectively gather and communicate online. I see people saying so often “people should do thing” with no details, no direction, it’s just blathe over there ism, with a side of someone elses problem. Someone should do something!? What, should be done. Every time you go to say that sentence, why not instead find a micro or macro aggression focused on destabilising the powers that be, and post a suggestion for actual action people can do, instead. You acknowledge you could do more, there’s something to do. It doesn’t have to all be grand Molotov cocktails at buildings, it can be death by a thousand paper cuts. What are the paper cuts people who have no ability to leave their jobs or spaces, and can action now.
