And to better sell this idea of Arabs not producing science or literature, let us ban algebra and algorithms so people don’t think of those things ever.

      And also …capitalism?

Early forms of capitalism are thought to have been developed in the Islamic Golden Age starting from the 9th century, and later became dominant in European Muslim territories like Al-Andalus and the Emirate of Sicily. The Islamic economic concepts taken and applied by the gunpowder empires and various Islamic kingdoms and sultanates led to systemic changes in their economy, particularly in the Mughal Empire. Bengal, a major trading nation of the medieval world, signaled the period of proto-industrialization making direct contribution to the world's first Industrial Revolution after the British conquests.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_economics

(I do know Muslim ≠ Arab but a lot of key researchers and their peers were Arab)

        Arab ≠ Islamic Not always.

Many non-Arab peoples also adopted Islam.

Be sure to read the fine print when reading about history…

Even if this total lie were somehow true, that there was something about Arab culture or Semitic people that magically made them unable to “produce culture” uhhh they’re still people?? Like they deserve exactly as much dignity and respect as any other people.

But it’s also obviously a stupid racist lie.

I really REALLY want this to happen. It would be such a perfect example of how incredibly ignorant they are and the complete lack of understanding they have for the world around them.

Like the time a city banned “di-hydrogen monoxide” for like a day until they realized it was just a fancy name for H2O lol

        That’s not quite the story…

Viejo, California put a proposal on its agenda to ban plastic foam containers over the chemicals used in making them. In the proposal they listed “dihydrogen monoxide”, among other things, presumably because they likely added it to the list after failing to identify a satire website, and it went viral, mostly in right-wing circles that hate anything that protects the environment.

It never got past the proposal stage, and the “dihydrogen monoxide” part wasn’t even the reason why. They never actually banned water and had to walk that back, a Republican lied to you to make you think that.

I think my high school chemistry teacher told us that as a reason why it’s important to know the periodic table or something, idk what their political motivations were.

But I guess even before AI stories were getting twisted and changed to fit narratives or serve personal purposes. Thanks for the info tho, always good to know more info.

They literally saved Greek science and mathematics from extinction during the dark ages. Sure, Arabic mathematics had its mini dark age when they decided everything should be human words only to make it easier to understand for humans, then they realized that wasn’t the way to go.

The Phoenician alphabet descends from the Proto-Sinaitic script though. So a bunch of nomads developed Egyptian hieroglyphs into a script to write proto-Canaanite inscriptions, which was the common ancestor of the Paleo-Hebrew alphabet, the Ancient South Arabian script, and the Phoenician alphabet

Who do you think the Phoenicians were? Do you think a sea faring people wouldn’t have picked up different nationalities? That’s why racism is so stupid.

        On the original point:

Mathematics during the Golden Age of Islam, especially during the 9th and 10th centuries, was built upon syntheses of Greek mathematics (Euclid, Archimedes, Apollonius) and Indian mathematics (Aryabhata, Brahmagupta). Important developments of the period include extension of the place-value system to include decimal fractions, the systematised study of algebra and advances in geometry and trigonometry.

I don’t know how one would have a positional numeral notation without zero, even if it’s denoted by an empty space. Sure enough, reportedly the symbol for zero appeared in the Hindu numerals, derived from the non-positional Brahmi system. Although apparently both ancient Babylon and China already had their own positional notations, both with a space for zero.

Arabs added a system for fractions instead.

Thirdly, in recent history there was one famous Arab guy who was so committed to producing literature he was writing books while working an extremely high stress job.

Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on. Keep on-topic

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.
