The word Soccer comes from England, too. It’s a Britishized version of “association football” with a typical R appended.

2·4 days agoOne of the great ironies of modern life is that people are often disinterested in the workings of the systems we build as a society, while those systems define so much of our lives. It takes time and effort and interest to learn these things, and most people lack at least one of those The folks here on Lemmy tend to be more plugged in than most people, but I’m willing to bet that there are areas where we have big blind spots in terms of the systems around us as well.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What were your thoughts about religion at 25 ?
21·5 days agoI believe that religion, at its best, gives us the vocabulary to express experiences that are beyond words. They spill over into music, song, art, poetry, and ritual. At the largest moments of our lives, we can feel disoriented by experiences for which we have no context; extreme loss or love, the birth of a child or the shock of illness. Religion can give us a connection to countless generations who have shared those experiences. It can give us a connection to something larger, outside ourselves.
Religious institutions can offer a social fabric that is often missing in modern life. There is no other place I can think of where you find a single room filled with families, children, elderly, across ways of life, incomes, and all sharing equal parts in one purpose.
