My favorite ads are the ones that can easily be solved with minimal human interaction. Apple released an ad for their “rewind” feature where the Apple Watch records everyone’s audio and transcribes it. Their shining example is if the waitress talks too fast you can stare at your watch instead of asking her to repeat herself.
Reminds me of my favorite; Sam Altman suggested using Open AI to create a podcast based on your kids’ interests to listen to on the way to school. The top comment was “Just talk to your kids.”
I mean, it could definitely be useful to listen to a podcast together with your kids, as a way of bonding. But… why not listen to a podcast made by humans? There are sooo many!

Many years ago I worked for a small research company that was trying to find applications for voice assistant technology. This was before LLMs mind you, so even more useless than today. One of their projects was “make an ai that will talk to your grandparents and transcribe their stories”.
I told them that if my kids did that to me I’d just never speak to them again.
They tried anyway, and surprise — it went nowhere.
Iirc someone on the selhosted com recently built this exact thing. An AI tool that asks family members questions about their lives and transcribes it into a digital scrapbook thing.
Literally made me sick.
Honestly, if it was more of an assistant that just sat alongside you and just did the recording, that would be dope as fuck.
I’m still sad that I don’t have a lot of memories of my grandparents, partially just age, but somewhat because I was an ungrateful little shit. I sat and listened to them talk a lot when I was a kid, and what memories I still have are gold. A tool like that could have helped keep what I had rather than being left with what time and CTE haven’t taken.

When I was in the Nordics many moons ago and rang up the hostel with my beginner English to ask a question, the receptionist rattled off the answer at 300 words per minute, of which I understood about none. Upon me asking her to repeat, she did in fact repeat, at the same speed and with the same result. I thanked her, hung up the phone and to this day have no idea what she said.

My girlfriends child is learning in school how to use chatgpt. They are heavily encouraged to use it to control their own text and whatever. She’s 8. She’s leqrning to use a tool ahe will never ever be allowed to in the future.
That is not good, especially at that age where the brain would be developing rapidly. This is the time where she really needs to use her brain to process information.

One time I successfully used an AI to troubleshoot a sound driver problem in Linux. It was maybe a little faster than casting about on stack exchange. I had to prompt it like 30 times though because it kept being confidently wrong. I didn’t continue to use it.

I used Claude terminal and it immediately identified that i had a service that constantly sent small packets to my headset and since all packets have to use the smallest ones it was crackling sometimes due to latency

I’ve been seeing ads made by ai and they’re even worse. Just saw one on YouTube for glasses “that change colour with just the touch of a finger!” And had ai video of smiling people at the beach tapping their lenses to change the glass colour multiple times, like the glass itself has rgb. Best part is, the fake product didn’t even work consistently in the ai video and didn’t change colour when they tapped sometimes.
I genuinely don’t understand how an ad that’s so obviously fake is tricking enough people to be worth spending an entire ad budget on.
Scams actually work better when they have obvious mistakes. It helps weed out people that might figure out the scam before they’ve handed over their money, saving the scammers time and effort and making the scam more efficient.
It is created in a couple of minutes and if it scams even a single rube, they will make a profit.

If you make it too hard to return and most people keep your crap, especially if its $20 or less. speak for yourself. chatgpt helped me program a medium-complexity task yesterday within ~3 hours which would have taken me about 1-2 weeks otherwise, i fear. especially, it’s really convenient because when you just don’t know some technical term, you can just describe what you mean and it will give you the correct keyword, while googling for that kind of information is difficult since you don’t even know where to start.

All the common AI tasks that by end-users and small businesses can be done better by local software rather than through compute on a hyperscale platform. The only reason to need big AI is for large-scale projects. They’re still selling compute at a huge loss, and their profits are dwarfed by their expenses.
(Some argue the expenses are due to the massive buildout, which is reaching a capability point of diminishing returns. But even the running expenses outweigh the profits, even with government contracts.)
You know, like controlling armies of killer drones, or processing mass surveillance data to find dissidents that are an actual threat. Or doing cyber-ops on a rival nation.
I think that is why the stock market is still investing in big AI, not because we want better slop, but because they want garrison large populations and wreck rival societies.
