So i have the vcs and love it. I just found out about the new c64 and it looks quite similar. I planned to try their os out on a vm later on.
Is the c64 worth its price?
That always depends. But, if you want an experience that supports all hardware and software. You can buy it cheaper than building yourself. And you’re supporting Chris/Perry as well as the designers who I believe are all now official commodore.
It’s FPGA and plays ROMs so I think it’s just more financially prudent to get a MisterFPGA - a much more versatile system that’s about as accurate. I’m rather confused about most of those single platform FPGA systems like new Commodore or Analogue 64 - do you really want to swap physical media? I’d understand getting this for aesthetics but at this price point? Hard sell for sure.
I love physical media so no problem with that for me ha
I think that’s generally right, if you just want to play games. I own a MiSTer and really like it; it’s convenient, it’s quick, and it’s really accurate. Where the single-core FPGA systems like the Spectrum Next and C64 Ultimate really come into their own is in things like physical peripherals and the tactile experience of the case and using the keyboard and so on. If that’s not important to you, then a MiSTer is going to be a better buy.
