Science@mander.xyz•TikTok’s algorithm favored Republican content in 2024 US electionsEnglish
12·9 days agoIt also matches preference of general public so one would say that algorithm works as expected?
If something is public domain then it’s incompatible with copyleft licenses, like GPL under which Linux is licensed.
Linux team is trolling AI boosters who can’t certify their code is clean unless they trained models themselves.

Programming@programming.dev•Are we doing crimes when scrapping data online? For example public available music?English
5·1 month agoNot only copyright is dead but so is licensing of things in general. This means there’ll be less original work from both commercial and non-commercial projects. Commercially there won’t be ways to profit so why bother. On the libre licensing front why would you contribute code to GPL licensed projects or release art under Creative Commons if it’s going to be license washed anyway?

9·1 month agoAnthropic claims that. Sucks for them now, but boy did it do wonders for their marketing.

71·1 month agoWhat if license and copyright was washed by using an LLM to translate Claude into another language?
Either way, Claude can’t be copyrighted because it’s a product of an LLM.

53·2 months agoI’m not worried about backups since all of Myrient content originated elsewhere. The true value of Myrient was how accessible and fast it was and that’s the hard part that this project hasn’t demonstrated yet.

4·2 months agoYeah, fair use apparently doesn’t work the same way in France. Regardless of this consumers can still claim they thought they were purchasing a legitimate product. Do you check if YouTube has rights to videos you’re watching there? Am I liable for watching Star Wars Holiday Special on Youtube?

3·2 months agoSure, but the users of the service could also claim they got scammed with a counterfeit product. Those selling the service are the only ones worth pursuing from the practical and ethical standpoint.

2·2 months agoI never realised how things are different in Poland when it comes to this. Around here you’d get away with downloading pretty much anything except software which is explicitly excluded from our fair use laws. You can share full copies of audio, video and text among close group of friends / relatives legally so if persecution happens it’s usually against those uploading torrents or selling piracy services where it’s easy to make a case that it wasn’t fair use.

4·2 months agoIt might be called something different but without fair use principles you wouldn’t be able to quote, review or parody a movie. This intent isn’t known by the persecutors ahead of time, hence what they’re doing is rather overzealous (an euphemism for police working for corpos).
