A 39 book bundle that is redeemed through Kobo.com.English3·2 years agoYes and yes. They use a couple of different drm schemes and you might need an adobe digital editions login for anything using the older one. The newer one doesn’t need anything special.

It looks like there’s a Lineage OS build for the shield, so if you want to eradicate google, there’s an option. It loses a fair bit of what makes the shield great though, since some of the audio and video playback stuff on the shield is proprietary to Nvidia.
I’m not sure about using it without a Google account, but you can definitely minimize their involvement. I installed flauncher, then disabled the default “leanback” launcher. Plex is installed from the play store but I side loaded an ad-blocking YouTube app. On a normal day I don’t see anything from or about google on my screen. I’m not sophisticated or, to be honest, concerned enough to know if there’s tracking or other telemetry going on. I mostly just want to avoid ads and moronic suggestions from them.

AT&T will take over google’s part of it and promise never to raise rates but then they’ll add a new kind of fee every 2-3 months until you’re basically buying them a new satellite every month.

Right now in the US, Amazon has a very good discount on the Keychron C3 Pro. It’s a mechanical tkl keyboard, monochrome backlit, with gaskets and foam sound dampening. It’s $30 US at the moment, and it looks like it’s £42 on Amazon.co.uk for a logged out user.

Really nice!English6·2 years agoIt’s an old joke derived from American mafia movies where they’re demanding “protection” money from a business owner. They say stuff like “you got a real nice shop here… be a shame if something happened to it. If you pay me, my boys will make sure it doesn’t mysteriously burn down one night.”

robolemmy@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.ca•US: No mention of other political parties, other than republicans and democrats?English9·2 years agoBecause the US doesn’t have proportional representation and uses “first past the post” voting, basically any vote for a third party candidate is wasted.
There are other parties but their main effect is to sway elections by “stealing” votes from the two main parties. There’s a group trying to form a party called “No Labels” right now but if you look at their financial backers, you can clearly see they only exist to try to weaken democrats.
Admittedly there are some other parties that genuinely try to get elected, such as the Green Party, but they rarely succeed in even the tiniest local elections.
