It’s was weird hearing the “debates” about where or not men should still open doors for women in an equal society when the obvious solution was for everyone to hold doors open for everyone else. Are you at the door first? Hold it open. Is the other person’s hands full? Hold it open.

And it is important to memorize facts instead of looking them up every time because “true facts” become interconnected. You can find any info you want, true or false, but only true facts are interconnected. I recently had someone pull the “democrats supported slavery and the KKK” fact, which is historically true, but ignores that the republicans switched to supporting the bigots when the democrats starting supporting civil rights.

You actually need to retain information and be able to process that information to inoculate against misinformation.

I have politically active friends who are supposedly privacy minded blasting their takes on facebook and complaining when they get banned for inciting violence. Most people are terrible at this and the algos the feds use probably aren’t that great. I’m more likely to get grabbed randomly.

I’ve always isolated my username from irl stuff and I don’t make any social media posts from my irl stuff. You’d have to be very interested in me specifically and I’ve always tried to be slightly less noisy then the background noise.

They’ve been doing “stream” since I was in school and it made me a worse person. I was pigeonholed into the remedial classes with no way out. No pleading would do it. I was never given target grades to reach to get out. And that was just when I was trying to get into the average classes. At one point, I tried bypassing the and testing into Honors/AP. I was told I failed, but recently, I learned by accident that I passed those tests, but was lied to. The guidance counselor who leaked that to me was surprised I wasn’t happy about that and refused to say it was wrong. By the end, they were just telling me that the better classes were full, so I told them I would drop out 3 months from graduation and try again the next year. They thought I was bluffing.

Remedial classes do not focus on fixing anything. They’re just dumping grounds for undesirable students. The students are en mass, are unmotivated and bully anyone down that think doesn’t belong. I literately heard “What do you expect? We’re remedial students” from one of my classmates one time. The teacher just dropped her head.

You want to fix things? Start holding students back. Throw out the participation awards the boomers forced on everyone. Don’t just pipeline everyone into community colleges. Or make an actual High School track available in community college. My state supposedly has one, but they make it hard as hell to get any info on it.

I used reddit long before the /r/thedonald showed up. Before /r/atheism became a default sub, which was terrible for the community of that sub. It became meme infested and caused /r/trueatheism to be made for sharing stories about religion intolerance from politicians, educators and employers. At a certain point, I started wholesale blocking any major sub and power user to reclaim some usability, but the API change signaled to me it wasn’t worth the effort anymore.

A lot of lemmy users are ex reddit users and have reason they switched. I switched because it started looking more and more like twitter.
