Saw it in another thread, thought it might be interesting to share for people who find the Fossify one a bit basic: https://f-droid.org/packages/com.dot.gallery/
I found it doesn’t have great performance sadly. Can be significantly slower then fossify for rendering images.
that’s really interesting, i’ve had the opposite experience
“view network connections Allows the app to view information about network connections such as which networks exist and are connected.”
That’s a hell no from me.
I asked the creator. The F-Droid version does not actually use network access. It is used to access mapping API from Mapbox.
Any chance you asked about why they need to know what wifi networks are around and which ones I am connected to?
EDIT: Sorry, missed the link. You did ask that question, and they literally ignored it in their answer.
WiFi networks are often used to get your location. Not sure for what purpose.
Right, and a gallery app has zero reason to need that info.
Maybe it’s because of the face recognition?
If it has face recognition, than it’s a definite fuck no.
It’s done on device.
Doesn’t change a fact that someone that’s using Fossify Gallery, is not the target user for something that has a feature like this.
You’re right, I should’ve worded it differently.
Anyone that installed/is using a Fossify app, that actually read about Fossify and their missions statement (and aligned with it), wouldn’t be the target user for features like this.
What in their mission statement disqualifies on device face recognition?

As the other commenter said. Its required to display location preview.Android doesn’t have a default internet permission. But, some OEMs allow that. For others you can use Netguard to limit connection for your apps.
I don’t even see that permission listed. That being said, it’s a whole different permission than what I listed: “…information about network connections such as which networks exist and are connected.” is different from requiring internet activity.
Comparing this app to Fossify Gallery is straight silly, because people that chose Fossify Gallery, chose it because it didn’t have all this unnecessary garbage.
You could ask the developer himself or check the source since it is listed on github.
As for comparison to Fossify. I didn’t make that comparison.
I don’t need to ask anything. OP posted a comparison, that really isn’t. I made a point of one big reason why. You came here with the unrelated info.
You don’t need to act so dismissive. You literally posted about the network connection info permission. Someone asked and confirmed it was a remanant of a permission.
The fdroid version doesn’t even connect to the internet according to them. This was being way too paranoid for no reason.
It doesn’t change the fact that those permissions are necessary during install. Them saying “oh, don’t worry about that, it was a mistake” is laughable.
This wasn’t too paranoid for no reason, if you read what Fossify and their mission is about.
EDIT: spelling
That is how the location features work.
It’s not actually present in the FDroid version in any case according to the creator.
“however the ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE permission was left over by mistake, but any actual NETWORK calls are completely disabled.” Mistake huh? That’s assuring lol.
