We’re verging on a being a theocratic petro-state, but (therefore?) we do invest in roads. Your average Farm-to-Market is nicer than the US highways in many places. Our crony-capitalist toll roads are mostly very nice to drive on too, smooth even up to 100mph, though you pay for the privilege.

I haven’t been on the road a ton in recent years, nor have I driven every state, but I have driven at least some in every state from Vermont to Florida, across the entire American southeast, and down I-10 to California. In my experience, Louisiana was the worst.

I still keep reddit as a read-only resource, and yes, plenty of people still use it. There are niche communities that I sure do wish could hit a critical mass on the threadiverse, and the archive of advice and (mostly) human reviews of stuff are helpful.

That said, either it’s reddit or it’s me, but any community that’s even slightly large seems to have a lost a little thoughtfulness and vibrancy. The takes are more boring, the jokes more repetitive, and I run across others’ “goodbye overwrites” a lot more often than I thought I would, and generally in places where it seems like the original posts were genuine attempts to be helpful. Reddit is not gone, but it is reduced, and must eventually fade into the west.

My first two DIY builds were orthos, but it sort of didn’t take. I did realize that while I don’t type properly or even all that well, I still don’t particularly need a full size spacebar as I almost always land in the same spot with my right thumb or (forgive me) index finger. I use KMK for my boards, and the debounce is good enough that if I happen to double tap the two spacebars, it won’t register two taps. The rest of the longer keys don’t REALLY need to be that long, and everybody hates lubing and tuning stabs (or they damn well should) anyway.

Enter is going to be the biggest keycap at 1.75u. You get a little wobble (box/dustproof switches can help some), but nothing structurally problematic. Most boards only start with stabs at 2u.

I’m currently using this one’s FRL ancestor, and the only real issue I have is that it uses a 1U LShift with another 1u between it and the ‘Z’ key (kinda ISO-ish), and I just can’t quite get 100% used to it, hence the “tombstone” layout on the new build.

If we’re just trying to keep it simple with a single, reputable vendor:

Keychron v3 barebones TKL
White on Black “OSA” keycaps, which look “swoopy” and modernly retro, but mostly feel like regular OEM on your SteelSeries
Gateron Black switches.

EDIT: Nordic makes it a little more expensive at Keychron and with fewer options, but it’s still doable. If you get one that’s QMK compatible, any ISO can be Nordic, and you just need to source keycaps, which they do have though I don’t see them in white on black.

I made a split, even posted it here on c/emk, but at this point I am just too old, yes, too old to begin the training. I had no motivation to actually learn to type on the thing, but rather just wanted to make more keyboards.

White filament and a sharp pocket knife hide many sins, but thanks. It came out quite okay, and the cheap hardboard from Home Depot cuts very nicely with even a cheap laser.

It’s actually not secured yet. I included a couple of hexagonal openings in the long legs of the print that should accommodate a heated brass standoff just about right; it’ll be very similar to your alignment pins. I used the idea on my last keyboard and it worked well. The gap will be closed a bit more after securing the screws from the bottom plate. It will be nowhere near “perfect,” and but the end result should be a bit cleaner than this in-progress state. I am fairly pleased how decorative grooves draw the eye away from the seam a bit, but I’m not really trying to hide that it is 3D printed, and that in two pieces.

Influenced, yes, but it’s also important to keep in mind that Lucas was working with a lot of influences, including some that make no sense if viewed as a cohesive allegory. For instance, the power relationship of the Rebels to the Empire has parallels of the Viet Cong to the US military. In a cut scene, though, Biggs specifically (and tediously, hence the cut) cites the Empire’s nationalization of private industry as influencing his decision to join the Rebels.

Lucas has always been a well-meaning, left-leaning, white American boomer. He includes relevant ideas based off that worldview in his work, but he’s not making grand political statements or really even engaging with political thought in a serious manner. Star Wars is probably more timeless and better for it.

Tree supports and careful use of an exacto knife could also make it work. Post processing can be a bit much sometimes, but it doesn’t have to be the enemy either.

The best I can find around here in north Texas are pre packaged raw peanuts, so they’re kinda old and super dry. They still boil up fine, but it takes for-fucking-ever. I’ve found that salt and Adobo seasoning gives them a nice mellow garlic flavor that works really well for me. Canned Cajun style are good too, though there are more squishies than I’d prefer.

Our house will get about 90 seconds or so of totality, so I am really stoked that I get to see it but don’t have to make it a whole thing. Only thing I haven’t decided is if I’m going to try to muscle in on my kid’s elementary school events or grab her after lunch.
