The ‘challenger’ parties like Green, “Your Party” and Reform are very popular, especially with the young and the poor.

I think a lot of people expect them to take a lot of local seats and councils in the next few years.

And while Reform has been dragging Labour to the right (with not a lot of protest from Kier, I think), some of these new leftist parties will hopefully drag him back to at least the centre. Just though influencing the soulless polling he seems to use to decide what he cares about in any given month.

I think the idea is that it’s practice, but also a warning shot.

I worked at a company that helped people find the best loans for their situation.

Basically a price comparison site. No sponsored content or anything.

One day I was asked about setting up a payday loans option for the site and just said no.

I’d listened to some podcast about just how predatory the industry was, and even though our national regulations meant it couldn’t get as bad as some places, it was still unacceptably predatory.

I showed the manager stats for repayment, interest and average income of a customer and said if he went forward with this I would not be participating.

And if he was going to ask me to participate regardless, I would hand him my notice on the spot.

They never did anything with payday loans after that. I think most people were pretty happy about it.

This is a sort of “but it’s weird that it happened twice” thing, but I had a friend out researching Orangutans in I think Indonesia and he dropped dead after (supposedly) recovering from a fever.

Probably only a few years younger than your friend.

I’ve not kept up with his research but I suspect the species is almost certainly declining worse than when he was there.
