  • “Both sides bad” is how liberals adapt to the cognitive dissonance of personally disliking the idea of killings while living in a society that requires ongoing killings to function. If they really didn’t care, it’s way easier be a full-throated Zionist in the empire. It’s popular, it costs you nothing, and you don’t even have to think about it. To acknowledge that the empire requires every death to maintain the imperial standard of living is to completely alienate yourself from the rest of imperial society. Well adjusted people that don’t already hate their lives generally aren’t in a huge hurry to completely alienate themselves from everyone they know in real life over an issue that only exists on TV for them. Their humanity is in conflict with their class interest, and the adaptation is to focus their attention on the killings that don’t put them directly at odds with their imperial peers: You’re allowed to cry for the civilians as long as you condemn Hamas. You can criticize Netanyahu as long as you support “Israel’s right to defend itself”. You can dislike war, police shootings, mass incarceration, and poverty, so long as you pay your taxes and keep voting for people who will keep doing those things.

  • Ukraine isn’t “defending itself from an invasion”. Ukraine’s democratically elected government was overthrown by a US sponsored military coup. The coup was carried out by Nazis that want to ethnically cleanse ethnic Russians from the territory. The Russian majority areas voted overwhelmingly to secede from Ukraine and called on Russia to protect them when the Ukrainian coup government invaded them.

Russia’s goal is not “conquering all of Ukraine”. Russia’s military objectives are

    1. Halting the ongoing killing of ethnic Russians in the Donbas Republics by the Ukrainian nazi coup government.

    2. Disabling the nazi coup government’s military capacity to act as a staging ground for US attacks on Russia.

Russia has continually offered ceasefires with the only substantive condition being “stop killing Russians”, and the nazi coup government has been unwilling to negotiate because the US has told them they’re not permitted to stop killing.

No, but modern settler colonialism is largely limited to the Euro-American present. White Euro-Americans built the empire they now live in on a centuries long campaign of ongoing brutal extraction against the rest of the world, then turned around and said “This is just the way god made the world. Why would anyone want to disrupt this natural state of peace?”

Peace for a slaver is not peace for a slave.

The issue, which is obvious to most people that aren’t Euro-American, is that if you view generations of colonial violence as a normal baseline, then calling for “both sides” to “stop fighting” whenever colonial subjects resist isn’t actually calling for peace. It’s calling for the colonized to submit and go back to being quietly exterminated in an orderly fashion so you can go back to not thinking about it.

  • Individual people having backwards views stemming from generations of impoverishment doesn’t justify imprisoning and exterminating an entire indigenous population. That population has an unconditional right to resist their colonization using whatever means are available to them.

I’m stating a moral position here, not trying to argue with you, because you don’t actually care about some unique technical specifics in this one situation. You’d be saying the same thing about “this civil rights leader said all white people or bad”, or “that escaped slave hurt that poor white family”, or “those Indian savages beheaded 100 settler babies” as though any of that justified the generations of colonial extraction that you benefit from. Whatever helps you sleep at night.
