niktemadur@lemmy.worldOPto Ask Science@lemmy.world•In science lectures and podcasts, I hear the terms "trivial" and "naive" used often, with no explanation as to what they mean specifically by that. What do they mean by "trivial" and "naive"?English2·9 days agoThen it sounds like the term “trivial” is subjective, which feels kinda icky in math. Worse, it sounds as if the “dear reader” is supposed to figure out what the author or lecturer means by “trivial” in each case; sure, there is context involved, but still… icky.

What do they mean by "trivial" and "naive"?English1·9 days agoIn physics, two terms that I often seem to notice together are “trivial” and “local”. Local is easy to define clearly: within the speed of light/causality. Trivial seems like a vaguer term.
Betcha this guy’s a hit at all the parties and with all the ladies.
Last time I went to my cellphone carrier offices to upgrade my hardware, they were already pushing the iPhone 15 or 16, but I went in there and asked for the iPhone 10, managed to get the very last one they had in stock. It cost a fraction of what the latest ones did, does everything I need it to do, and a couple of years later it’s still purring like a kitten.
You might need a murder of crows for that one.

Wanna bet that whoever latches onto the image to jam their lazy uninformed truthiness (as Stephen Colbert coined the term) narrative into, uses the same kind of lazy uninformed truthiness narrative

to not vote and empower the goose-stepping fascist goons into the federal government and into their communities.
But then there’s the guy who added all the mass and energy of the observable universe, calculated its’ Schwarzschild Radius, and came up with 13.8 billion light years.
There’s also how our observable universe’s Hubble Horizon acts like a black hole event horizon, the way in which even the speed of light is insufficient to escape beyond.
A lot of the math inside a black hole is eerily similar to the math of our own horizon, as traced by the age of the universe plus the speed of light.
Take it one level lower on down, when you’re the size of an electron, orbitals are wild, turbulent places, sometimes sharing electrons which also often get zapped by light, so they jump to a higher orbital, then they randomly spit out that photon and reappear back down… all the orbitals of a molecule violently jiggling all the time.
Take photosynthesis. Simply put and to oversimplify but it’s essentially accurate, a photon hits an electron bullseye in a leaf molecule, which sets off a wave of energy in motion, breaking up molecules, reassembling them into sugars and waste product (oxygen).
A red photon raises an electron one orbital up, that sets off one process at a certain level of energy. A blue photon raises an electron two orbitals up, that sets off another process at twice the energy level.
Potential voters were warned about this shit - among many other things - in 2016 and the sabotage of Merrick Garland’s nomination, the blatant republican disdain for the democratic process, the enabling of fascist frenzy already whistling at full boil.
But vote for a woman?!! When pigs fly!!!Potential voters were warned about this shit - among many other things - in 2024, the blatant republican disdain for the democratic process, how the fascist frenzy had stormed the Capitol four years prior and people getting killed in the process, the supreme court revoking women’s right to choose, many MANY other things.
But vote for a woman?!! When pigs fly!!!Non-voters didn’t just shit on their own drinking water, they shat on ALL our water supply. Stubbornly ignorant, erratic, impatient and petty, oh-so-precious-and-pure deadweights that they are.
But I thought God created the Universe to find out how Game Of Thrones ended.
SPOILER ALERT: He didn’t like it
niktemadur@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's something that recently boggled your mind?1·2 years agoGluons, the Strong Force. Quantum Chromodynamics. As massless particles, Gluons also move at the speed of causality, although popping in and out between Quarks and moving only very short distances.
They call it the speed of light, but the alternate term speed of causality is gaining traction. Maybe because it fits as the “c” in E=mc^2, where the “c” is sometimes referred to as “constant” but actually comes from the latin “celeritas”, which means “speed”.
The term “causality” is a nice fit-all more recent alternative.
niktemadur@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's something that recently boggled your mind?11·2 years agoAnother one is how Eskimos have 53 words for “snow”, not just “powder” and “slush”, but everything in between and beyond.
Fun fact: if we could see through the intensity of sunlight to pick up its’ color, it turns out green light is the most prevalent photon wavelength.
Surely this and phenomena like photosynthesis are directly related.
niktemadur@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•I’ve just turned 40. What advice would you older lemmy users give me?3·2 years agoI mean to do it regularly. Ideally, every day, even if just for 5 minutes.
Personally, I sit in a dark room, on a one-person couch with no armrests, so I can bend my knees and open my legs butterfly-style with the soles of the feet touching. I put a firm cushion on my back to keep it straight, keep myself at a 90° angle.
Always paying attention to my breath, releasing whatever is on my mind at the moment of exhaling, while trying to not do anything (now there’s a paradox), to let go and just observe, returning to the breath, returning to the breath, returning to the breath.
I started doing this for 10-15 minute sessions, worked up to 25 minutes, jumped to around a full hour, and have settled on around 45 minutes.
Sometimes, I’ll do this in the backyard. There’s loud traffic nearby, including trailer trucks, but there’s also some beautiful birdsongs coming from the trees.
And in theory, one is supposed to be able to meditate perfectly fine even if there’s a jackhammer operating by your side. You could also focus on the breath while thinking something along the lines of:
“I am calm…” while inhaling, then “…and I smile” while exhaling.
You could do this at the start, at the end, at the middle, during the whole session, not at all… there are no fixed rules, do what the moment calls for, go with the flow. Do it until you… stop. By that token, also don’t do it until you start.
Yes it do, think about it!
