@Carlo @startrek I didn’t get into DS9 until I was older. I think its complexity and more morally grey tone would have put me off as a kid, but as an adult I loved it.

@CCMan1701A @startrek I haven’t liked Discovery or Picard, but I’ve *really* enjoyed Strange New Worlds, and Lower Decks has been a surprising delight.

@FaceDeer @startrek Modern Trek has *really* pushed both the opposition to genetic enhancement and the prohibition of sentient AI. I suppose it is kinda in keeping with the “humanism” of the source material, but it seems like a blinkered view of the future. (I contrast it with the similarly post-scarcity Culture novels, where both biological modification and artificial Minds are common.)

@poundsignbuttstuff @startrek I thought he says explicitly that it contains adrenaline and pain inhibitors. I’m not sure such a real-world cocktail would have the portrayed effects, but it’s clear they’re trying to ground the concoction realistically.

@lonlazarus @startrek The show The Magicians did a musical episode every year that generally was quite good, but again, the premise allowed that kind of fancy.

@rob_t_firefly I’m not sure why a diplomatic vessel wouldn’t need to be fast. I would think the opposite — diplomacy can be needed in rapidly-developing crisis situations, and you’d want people there as soon as possible.

@stuck Terrific performance, and a great re-imagining of a character that was woefully underserved in TOS.

@darth_helmet @47_alpha_tango I like Ortegas a lot, but I think it is kinda silly that a huge starship would need (or could use) a hotshot pilot. The ship is like an aircraft carrier, which generally don’t make fancy moves.

@RootBeerGuy @startrek The transporter is essentially magic. If you think too long about it, you’ll wonder why, for example, *everyone* doesn’t “store their pattern”, and thus become effectively immortal. Or why a pattern can’t be materialized multiple times, to generate an army of clones.

I love Trek, but it’s much more space opera than hard sci-fi, and often the “sciencey” bits are purely for narrative convenience (see also “holodeck”).
