Ironically, if Graphene would succeed, it would lead to a system that’s every bit as locked down as a manufacturer’s Android. GrapheneOS would also not allow you to have root etc.

It will not though. Explicit sync is not a magic solution, it’s just another way of syncing GPU work. Unlike implicit sync it needs to be implemented by every part of the graphical stack. Just because Nvidia is implementing it will not solve issues with compositors not having it, and graphical libraries not having it, and apps not supporting it, and so on and so forth. It’s a step in the right direction but it won’t fix everything overnight like some people think.

Also it’s silly that this piece mentions Wayland and Nvidia because (1) Wayland doesn’t implement sync of any kind, they probably meant to say “the Wayland stack” and (2) Nvidia is not the only driver that needs to implement explicit sync.

It’s their wet dream. Making software without programmers.

It’s already in files. I’m looking for something that will let me search and view the files remotely. Something better than logging in with ssh and grepping and looking at the raw mails. Which is still useful in a pinch but gets tedious when you need to read an attachment, or when the message was HTML.

Why would anybody get into an unbreakable office lease of 10 years? Let alone 30.

I’ll never understand why Microsoft dropped their engine. They can afford to develop it and it would’ve been a great advantage vs Google. I mean, it wouldn’t have helped open source folk either way, but I just don’t get why they dropped it.

It’s a wrapper over Google Play not F-Droid. Much nicer interface, you can filter for things like ads/paid/GSF, you can bypass some regional blocks, you can login with Google accounts or use it anonymously etc.

In case anybody else is confused: the Python runs on the backend, you give it an sqlite file as argument and it spawns a web-server that serves a MVC CRUD interface for that file.

There’s very little bloatware preinstalled nowadays. Mostly the Google stuff. They come with a couple of extra apps (Netflix, LinkedIn, Facebook) but they can be disabled. Sony themselves have a couple of Xperia apps but same thing, easily disabled. It’s more than Pixel but nothing compared to the bloat on a Samsung.

Also super pleased with my Sony, after years of Samsung. Unbloated, battery lasts, good settings in all the right places.

See if the TV supports DLNA by any chance, Jellyfin does, so all you’d need would be a DLNA controller app on your phone to make one cast to the other.

Alternatively, there’s a self-hosted app called BubbleUPnP Server that can DLNA-enable (some) things without native support. I know for a fact it can do it for Google devices, maybe it can do it for Samsung too.

They have a good collection of movies and series. They’ve also started diversifying, bringing in some anime, some documentaries…

Typically on a home server you would virtualize services anyway so it really doesn’t matter what distro is running on the metal.

And also if you’re fully virtualized you can switch out the host distro anytime you want, so you can adopt an immutable one later if you want.

Why do you want an immutable distro anyway?

That’s the thing, it’s usually just the one set of credentials and it has access to everything. Although to be fair they don’t store the actual CC details anymore, just bank tokens.

The 4 HDDs alone will do at least 60W, no matter what you connect them to.

CPUs have excellent idling capabilities, and you can control and customize fans.

You may save like 10-20W with a low power PC but you also give up a lot of features — HDDs in a cramped enclosure with one 50-80mm fan going crazy vs having 2x 120mm fans spinning slowly for example.

You also have to figure out offsetting the initial costs — how soon will the money you spend on hardware will be recovered from the power bill savings? If it takes 10 years to break even it may not be worth it to you.

SSDs draw less power than HDDs, first of all. But regardless, if the enclosure chipset is poor quality and/or hasn’t been designed to run 24/7 it can overheat and disconnect intermittently or permanently.

And that’s without going into the quality of the USB and drivers on the host.

You either lucked out or you’ve been having silent file corruptions going for 10 years without realizing. What filesystems do you have on those disks?

But you don’t have to guess package names. Installing a Flatpak adds an entry to the Applications menu so you already have a shortcut. If for some reason you need to find out the names, there’s flatpak list.

I add --help to commands and it seems pretty good, what’s missing?
