flathead@lemm.eeto World News@lemmy.world•For First Time in Two Decades, U.S. Buys More From Mexico Than ChinaEnglish1·2 years agoThanks for the additional info. Sorry - that article I posted was not very well researched - I should have looked for something better, but was just making a point that inequity is still a big problem in a “prosperous” Mexico.
I appreciate you also confirming that working conditions in maquiladoras are accountable to some decent standards, and that they provide additional benefits - overtime pay rates being one of them, which is encouraging to hear - I wonder if that was due to labor unions or not.
Clearly, they are better places to work than many other local options. So for sure, not everything about maquiladoras is negative - and they are certainly not the root cause of disparity in North America. Thanks again for correcting the perception I might have given with that article.

Also long time user here - but prefer to skip the data collection bit. Imagine showing up at the dentist some day and being chided for missing your back molars last Tuesday.
flathead@lemm.eeto Australia@aussie.zone•What were some of your favourite Australian TV shows?1·2 years agoI think Kath and Kim is a keeper. Like Kingswood Country, the suburban social commentary runs deeper than the gags make it appear. Based on your mention of The Sullivans, I would also recomend Power Without Glory if you can find it. That is a largely true story from that era which was very well done.
flathead@lemm.eeto Technology@lemmy.world•No, 3 million electric toothbrushes were not used in a DDoS attackEnglish4·2 years agoThe primary use case is for making sure kids and elderly loved ones are brushing their teeth and keeping the brush charged. Also supposedly senses if all teeth are being properly cleaned, although based on reviews that sounds like a stretch. But yeah, the aggregated data is probably marketable somehow - I didn’t check their privacy policies.
Electric toothbrushes are a thing. It’s understandable that the vendors would like a rationale to track usage. Not beyond the bounds of possibility that in ten years it may be impossible to buy an electric toothbrush that doesn’t track usage and try to phone home to report it.

Presumably, we can expect 404 to eventually replace 42 as the answer to everything.
A German guy once told me that the original penalty for violating that law was that the brewer was to be drowned in his own beer - to be fair, he was quite drunk at the time, so it might be complete bullshit.
