  • I wish it were that easy. I’m pretty tech literate and I’ve had Linux installed on and off since the late 1990’s. I’m running fedora desktop on a dual boot machine that also has windows 10. The PC will run windows 11 but just like everyone else I’m not excited to upgrade.

But I still have to hop over to windows to do things. I know it’s a chicken and egg thing, but Linux just needs to get over the hump if ease of use and app availability.

Having to switch from. App1 to app1 that boat do say, CAD, is hard. It’s a learning curve. And add that learning curve into also switching to Linux and it’s overwhelming.

I actually got my dad on fedora, and he went all in and set it up, and worked quite diligently to get everything working for how he used his computer. He did this because his PC was fine but not windows 11 compatible. End the end there were just too many things that he struggled with and he broke down and bought a new PC that came with 11. One of the big issues he had was with documents. Syncing documents that he was editing.

He was OK relearning a new Libre Office but it was syncing it back to a Google drive or something that ultimately did not work for him. (I can’t remember exactly what he was doing).

He ran with Fedora for a couple months before giving up

  • “still even mentions plex”

I’ve been using plex for a LONG time, and bought a lifetime plexpass 12 years ago. I’m pretty sure I haven’t started a thread on Lemmy regarding Plex, but I’m sure I’m not alone as a LONG TIME user. Plex just works for me and cost me $75 in 2013. Right now I’ve got no pressing reason to switch.

If they remove my plexpass features, or start showing me ads / making my user experience worse, then I’ll probably look to change, and won’t participate in these awful ‘plex’ posts.

P.S. we should encourage as much new content on Lemmy as possible if you ask me.

  • Since 2015 ish I started unfollowing both left and right side friends because of political talk from people on my friends list on Facebook. I really have pruned it to be only people that post stuff they’re doing. Same for people that only forward stuff. (News or whatever).

I broke down and posted about yesterday on my feed with a link to a YouTube video of the press conference. Expressing how utterly disgusted I was.

It’s a minor thing but it should make it very clear how I feel and the line we crossed with that display.

  • I actually filled out their form, with my info but didn’t meme them. I wrote out a paragraph or so message about how disingenuous the GOP has been. That this Grandstanding and fear tactics are what has been “dividing” people and that his webpage/form, along with other bills they continue to introduce are the problem. I also reminded him that children aren’t racist, homophobic, (should have included religious) until adults teach them these things.

I’m sure my message will get lost in the memes but it made me feel better.

  • Hello fellow Hoosier, I emailed our school superintendent last year when the stupid book banning bill thing was proposed, and then passed. I wanted to know if there would be a way to tell if people requested books to be banned, so I could go out and buy them for my kid to read. (because obviously they must be read worthy)

I followed up with him recently since the bill had passed. He did, at least, inform me that no ban requests have been made. So at least in our school there wasn’t some crazy people waiting to start complaining and getting books removed. There doesn’t seem to be an easy way to search for banned books though which I would like to see as an option.

  • A coordinated effort to stop visiting them until certain features are included, or certain changes made would be glorious, however I just don’t see it happening

There’s a lot of basic config/features YT needs. I’m a paying customer also. (YT premium family)

Like as a simple example. I don’t want to watch shorts. I can X the shorts bar away for 30 days at a time but it just comes back. Why can’t I disable shorts in settings permanently? (I mean I know why)

I want to sort channel videos by date, oldest to newest because the content I watch is longer form and generally follows a timeline of events that I want to watch in order.

    1. that is all but impossible without manually creating playlists and adding videos in the order you want (a real pita)

    2. I cannot easily get back to watch the next video in that series. Doing the above helps, but there’s no pick up where you left off. There’s some BS continue the video you were in the middle of featuring paywalled in premium that I find mildly helpful but most times if I bail on a video I’m done with it I don’t want a reminder/easy continue tile for it.

There’s lots more around detailed searching…
