decadentrebel@lemmy.worldMto Philippines@lemmy.world•In that world, they have to weigh between *ideals*, *moral purity* vs. *compromise* & *pragmatism*. That more than half a century ago, another Aquino was then in that snakepit called the Senate.English2·30 days agoThe problem I have with these people lawyering for Bam and Kiko is that when anyone else does it, matic ekis kaagad sa kanila.
When bills like the Maharlika fund and legalizing POGOs were put up for a vote, they get mad at those who side (or abstain) with the express intent of not pissing off the super majority and burning political capital. Wag daw kalimutan yung mga bumoto for it. But now that Bam and Kiko are doing it, purist ka na when you call it out.
Heck, just a few weeks ago we were mad at Chiz — pero ngayon we’re letting Bam and Kiko’s decision to vote for him as SP slide kasi “hurr durr committee chairmanship”.
Naaalala ko na naman tuloy yung pagdadownplay nila sa mga LGBT who hated Heidi’s conservative ass. Single issue voter daw. Kek.
Edit: Sure enough, Bam got screwed. His platform was free college education and guaranteed jobs which are under Higher, Technical and Vocational Education. Instead, he only gets Basic Education - his same chair from way back.
All matters directly and principally relating to pre-school, elementary and secondary education, science high schools except the Philippine Science High School System, special education, teachers’ and students’ welfare, non-formal and community adult education, the national language, libraries and museums, and the preservation and enrichment of Filipino culture.
Edit 2: Looks like it actually paid off. Cayetano is looking to pawn off the Science & Tech chairmanship to him.
decadentrebel@lemmy.worldOPMto Philippines@lemmy.world•The UndustFixation FAQ and MegathreadEnglish1·1 month agoThis is for my Undusthings sister channel which are mostly educational explainer videos.
Bakit taglish yung language? Pinoy ang main audience mo.
Yes, the content at the moment is predominantly about Filipino culture — but I don’t like to box myself in on a certain audience. If it’s old and I feel like it deserves a look regardless of its country of origin, I’m going to cover it.
As for taglish, I’m more comfortable with it and I feel that’s how most Filipinos communicate in reality. Wala naman nagsasalita these days ng full on straight tagalog like they’re on a covert Illustrados meeting — and this is coming from someone who hates speaking in English in person! LOL! It also separates me from the hundreds of other local nostalgia channels.
Is that your voice??
It’s not. I use a text-to-speech AI with quite possibly the most authentic Filipino-sounding voice I could find. I mean it had you fooled, lol. It’s just impossible for me to do any clean voice overs given the circumstances — and that’s living in a bungalow with a kid and construction work on the neighboring lot. Doing a Zoom call with a dynamic mic feels like I’m in Ubon Ratchathani.
This is also partly the reason why the language is predominantly English.
Do <insert lost media here> please!
While I’ve done (and intend to do more) lost media stuff, I try to avoid it as much as possible. There’s just too many channels doing that already. And if it’s lost, chances are there’s little material to work with in terms of visuals.
The other day, someone called Undusthings the “Filipino Oddheader” and I like that. I’ve never heard of the channel before that comment but it’s accurate. I hope it could be half as good as that channel someday.
What makes your channel different?
For one, I use (often) never-before-seen clips directly from my vault. Even if it’s not rare, it’s still my own capture. I try to avoid using clips that are not mine as much as I can avoid it.
Secondly, I try to focus on topics that are often not covered by anyone else. Sometimes it can be too nichey and only a few people could relate, but that’s alright. I just don’t see the value proposition of doing the exact same thing as any other channel.
Most importantly, I’m not in it for the money. I’m not going to put up a 15-minute video of nothing just so I’d have more advertising time or watch hours. If there’s only enough material for a 4-minute video then that’s it. I’m not going to paraphrase an entire Wikipedia article — you’re going to get my own thoughts and experiences. Any centavo I earn (if ever I become eligible) just goes back to producing content. Filmora’s assets library can be pricey, those bastards.
I’d also love to watch something that I actually like. That’s why you would occasionally get a post-modernist thesis on the UAAP opening. Total headscratcher for everyone else, but amusing to me. 🤣
How do I contact you?
Fire me an email at things@undustfixation.com. But please, limit it to suggestions or feedback only and not for me to find you a video.

That’s a good point, but easier said than done with increasingly elaborate salisi methods. Itong ketchup modus nga lang is amateur hour. You can just ignore them when you realize na it’s just a rehash of the “dura” tactic. Yung matindi talaga yung nambabangga kasi mangyayari talaga yun and 99% of the time hindi sya modus.

Only in da pelepens lang daw nagiiwan ng pinagkainan, nagcocounterflow, nag-aanak at nangungutang, bumibili ng iPhone for da clout, bumoboto ng hindi abogado, sumisingit sa pila, hindi nagsosoli ng wristbands sa concert, ginagawang palusot mental illness para umabsent, and so on.
I guess that sub revels in the self-hating whilst r/PH still thinks it’s superior to FB?

They also say that JLC and Shaina went to a hospital to have his dick pulled out and Piolo Pascual is gay. It’s all hearsay. In a way, Duterte’s fentanyl addiction is just as unreliable because the only source is him.
That said, this is maybe just the utilitarian in me speaking. I don’t think being into drugs diminishes my view of a person, regardless if it conflicts with my own moral base (being straight edge and all). Illegal yes, but so is piracy.
decadentrebel@lemmy.worldMto Philippines@lemmy.world•Monthly random discussion - Jan 2024English1·2 years agoThat’s the thing. They drive “aggressively” (or poorly) because they need to make money. If they’re going to take it away (as well as institute modernization that eats more into those earnings), they need to replace it with a system that guarantees it’s going to make as much.
That’s ultimately the crux as to why they’re against modernization - the government isn’t really doing anything to address those concerns. Willy nilly implementation lang, bahala kayo sa buhay nyo.
decadentrebel@lemmy.worldMto Philippines@lemmy.world•Monthly random discussion - Jan 2024English1·2 years agoAs someone who has rode an e-jeep many times when I was still commuting, I just want to clear some of the misinformation:
Jeepney drivers NEED boundary not just because they only make money when they hit the quantifiers, it’s so they could make more. It’s even more imperative that they do once the modernization happens so they could pay for the loan.
I don’t get what OP meant na dapat hindi payagan ng mga pasahero yung ganyan sistema. What does he want us to do, boycott jeeps? Lmao.
Tell me you don’t ride a jeep without telling me you don’t ride a jeep, lol.
Kung regular ka sa jeep pag umuulan, you would know na may cellophane na trapal yung jeep na pwede ibaba once umulan. It’s virtually impossible to get wet once that’s in place.
The downside is pag tumila na ulan, ang init sa loob. That’s the same problem you have with an e-jeep except it’s 100% of the time. Nakasara bintana kasi may aircon pero yung aircon naman mahina so para kang naka-sauna. It’s literally the reason why I quit working in the office!

Nikki Coseteng did say the same thing… but that was 1) way after Duterte mentioned it, 2) she was doing an interview throwing her support for Leni-Kiko, 3) and it’s really nothing more than “TrUsT mE bRo”.

decadentrebel@lemmy.worldMto Philippines@lemmy.world•Monthly random discussion - Jan 2024English2·2 years agoam curious how do said tapes even withstand erosion?
Tapes are honestly robust. Not many people know that so they tend to give up on their tapes if they get flooded, dirty, or the ribbon gets cut. Plenty of VHS got discarded during Ondoy when it could still be remedied. Dust, molds, and sticky shed - they can be cleaned. Huge pain in the ass, though! Here’s me cleaning one that’s super dirty.
and do you mind explaining the restoration process I imagine it ain’t cheap?
When I first started, I just bought a cheap VCR and a digital dongle that’s around 2k all in all. The results are okay, but you run into problems when the tape is in bad shape. I have since learned a lot and upgraded to better equipment.
It’s expensive (due to rarity), but luckily for me, VHS restoration isn’t a thing here so you can buy stuff much cheaper than those in the US. I was able to get an S-VHS player here for 9k when on eBay it runs for 84k++
Digitizing is real time. I copy it losslessly, upscale it a bit to 720p, then compress to mp4. I can’t afford a frame TBC (device used to clean VCR signals that was pricey then and is more pricey and rare now) so sometimes there’s not much I can do with super old and poorly-recorded tapes even if I have 80% of the highly recommended capture setup.
also gow do you even come accross these tapes
Most of it is from the little I was able to save from my own recordings. Used to have like 60 tapes but only set aside 15 when we remodeled the house a long time ago. The rest, I buy off Carousell or FB for dirt cheap because the seller just wants to get rid of it. Some are donations.
I regret getting in the hobby late in the game. Those who own recordings likely disposed of them many years ago. You also have to contend with cartels who buy tapes just so they’re the only ones who have copies of any lost media.
decadentrebel@lemmy.worldMto Philippines@lemmy.world•Monthly random discussion - Jan 2024English1·2 years agoRecently lang ako naka-encounter ng e-bikers (didn’t know that’s what they’re called) and they really need to be regulated. They don’t wear helmets, hindi nila tinatabi even if they sense a convoy of vehicles piling up on their six, they don’t make hand gestures when turning, and they often end up on busy roads.
On a related note, dapat may coding na rin mga motorcycles. In theory wala kasi they’re small enough to fit into anything, but in reality that isn’t the case. There’s so many of them parang kotse na rin sila with the space they take up. Heck, the riders themselves would be the first to tell you that they don’t have any glaring advantages against traffic anymore.
decadentrebel@lemmy.worldMto Philippines@lemmy.world•Monthly random discussion - Jan 2024English2·2 years agoThat makes sense. Although it would have been a lot easier had I not tagged the_yaya as a bot because technically she isn’t anymore (due to some API fuckery).
Cyclists and joggers are just as annoying as motorists, tbh. Kaya lakas ng tawa ko when that satire showed up on my feed of them (joggers pero you can easily replace it with cyclists just the same) complaining about UPCAT ruining their experience.
