Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the most unique role model you've heard that was a green flag?
6·3 年前Why not contact him anyway? The worst that can happen is that he says no. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, as they say…

World News@lemmy.world•Developed nations pledge $9.3 billion to global climate fund at gathering in GermanyEnglish
1·3 年前I don’t think it’s unrealistic to appreciate good news. I am more than aware of how bad things are, but to only fixate on the bad is not the way to do things. That’s not realistic because it ignores the fact that goods things are happening. Here’s two websites for you to enjoy, full of good news stories happening all over the world right now:
https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/category/news/earth/
You seem to be hoping for one big ‘this one thing will immediately save the world’ style discovery, but you and I know that’s not how these things work. If humanity is to ‘solve’ climate change it will not be through one single game changing moment, it’ll be via a cumulation of many success stories big and small, just like this one.
Bad news is addictive and it’s dangerous. Stay informed, obviously, but don’t neglect your own mental health for the sake of waiting for some hyperthetical panacea.
Ive said my piece. Hope you have a good day, friend.

1·3 年前Sure but it’s also important to not let perfect be the enemy of good. You’re right, we do need wide spread and systematic change, but we can also have minor wins like this as we work towards it. The two are not mutually exclusive - the existence of one doesn’t prevent the existence of the other. Small wins also maintain momentum, improve morale and foster continuous change. Let’s not argue over good news, it achieves nothing. At least take some time to appreciate the little wins, or all you’ll ever see is failures 👍.

4·3 年前That last line is a bit odd, isn’t it? A country isn’t reliant on being in or out of the EU to do cool stuff.
Either way, this is good news. We need more of this.

United Kingdom@feddit.uk•A quarter of Brits want a ban on fake grassEnglish
4·3 年前Plastic grass supports little in the way of biodiversity and will constantly shed microplastics. Actual grass also allows the absorption of rain water into the ground below, whereas fake grass does not. This can contribute to localised flooding, and causes problems for replenishment of aquifers. All in all its awful stuff and the sooner it’s banned the better IMO.

politics @lemmy.world•Please rename this community or change the subject
163·3 年前Totally agree. Either change it to something like USPolitics@lemmy.world or change the focus to world politics. There is so much more stuff going on around the globe politically, having everything ‘default’ to the US is such a myopic point of view.
Can’t say I’m dreading a ‘utopia’, vegan or otherwise…
They’re not saying people should stop eating meat entirely, they’re saying people should eat less i.e. swapping a burger with a bean casarole once a week or something. This is not a binary all-or-nothing situation. Every little helps, as they say.
That defeatist attitude benefits no one except the status quo. Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good. Any positive change is better than none.

Agreed. I think we should be investing our time and effort into trying to make the best of the situation, rather than constantly moaning that we lost. I voted remain, but even I can see that we’re better off as a nation trying to heal the divide and move forward than dwelling in the past.
