It would have been crazy if I had done that. Did you reply to the correct comment?

Technology@lemmy.world•Shutting down our public encrypted DNS servers and sponsoring Quad9 instead | Mullvad VPNEnglish
11·21 hours agoThere isn’t a comparable service.
If you don’t need what mullvad is selling then there are others out there but the landscape is hard to navigate if you don’t understand what you’re there for and how to choose what you give out.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is it possible to have a public forum without moderators?
32·22 hours agoYes everyone just abuses the people who are acting up until they stop posting. It works great.
You just need a vpn. Based on your other tech support threads you need the one with the fewest ways to mess up (I do too). You should try mullvad. If it turns out that you have to shuffle around different servers too often and can’t tolerate being blocked, switch to a geofencing bypass style vpn like nord or something.
Bear in mind I’m recommending mullvad because it’s really hard to use it in an unsafe way, which it unique in the vpn world. If you go with something else you’ll have to make sure you understand the choices you’re making which is often a tall order.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Looking for a secondary cheap phone for travel, any recommendations?
1·1 day agoIf you want to have a different Android device then your only real choice for crossing a border is graphene, assuming you care about not being detained the maximum amount of time that is legal while they apply celebrite to your phone.
In this circumstance it’s not out of the range of possibilities for dhs to get a warrant (they don’t need it if the place is close enough to a land border or international airport) and search your home or business where you left your current personal phone. They will have the home address from your passport (it’s illegal to not update it!) and will likely have no problem locating your place of business.
The problem with graphene at border crossings is that it’s made the news a bunch lately and an agent could see simply having a phone with graphene as probable cause, especially if you act like a weirdo.
The above is the reason I suggested ios devices. They resist cellebrite and look normal.
If you literally just want an android phone that you can use on vacation instead of your usual one, I hope you find some good input and resolve your needs.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Looking for a secondary cheap phone for travel, any recommendations?
1·1 day agoIt kinda depends on what your goal is. I tend to point people towards iphones in this situation because they don’t attract attention and can be easily secured. If you absolutely gotta have Android the best choice is a pixel with graphene. You gotta make sure the bootloader and carrier are both unlocked so you can install graphene though, so that’s something to navigate.
You said elsewhere that you don’t use eBay because of their age verification. It may be worthwhile, if you are underage, to think critically about what you’re trying to accomplish here.
No they are not. Famously last year it became public knowledge that the built in lawful intercept hardware backdoors across the entire cell phone network and pstn were compromised by “the Chinese”.
FaceTime audio, signal calls and perhaps WhatsApp use encryption in transit, so those backdoors don’t affect them. I don’t know about other data calling methods.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•For those looking to migrate away from Mullvad VPN, what are some alternatives that the community recommends?
23·2 days agoAir is my go to piracy vpn. Their app is garbage, use the config file generator instead. Air is my go to piracy VPN because it is a piracy vpn service. I would not use them as a shield from any sort of serious threat.
I use windscribe for stuff that doesn’t matter like bypassing geoblocks. I don’t trust them, their abilities or my ability to limit my own exposure to their malice, compliance or incompetence. It’s a confusing service.
People are suggesting ivpn and I have used it. It’s a downgrade from mullvad in every way but it might be safe. I can’t say because it hasn’t been tested in the same way.
I use mullvad when it actually matters. It’s really hard to screw up and they have the best app of any vpn service I’ve ever used.
There are a lot of people saying why they would want to move away from mullvad, why do you? What devices and operating systems do you use it on? How do you pay?

Privacy@lemmy.ml•PCCONTACTS - What do you think about this app? It safe?
3·2 days agoI wouldn’t use a package that does that because it breaks the security of proton, but tbh it’s email who cares.
As far as that package in particular who can say.
From a more 10,000 foot perspective: if you have to ask on a public forum if an application you give access to your secure email account so it can copy and paste contacts into your os address book is safe it’s probably worthwhile to figure out what you’re trying to do and under what constraints.
In that case plan on doing your research into what specific insane unofficial smarttube app you want to use.
Were you able to achieve your desired results?

Linux@lemmy.world•So I apparently didnt save my ZorinOS login password well enough and I cants log back inEnglish
6·3 days agoNo you don’t have to reinstall. If you didnt do disk encryption you can just boot from a usb, chroot in and passwd <username>
Your vpn question is too vague. All your computer support request posts are too vague. What vpn app do you want to use?
In my experience the only app that was worth a crap on Linux was mullvads and maybe nords but it’s been a while on that one and my expectations have risen a bunch since then. You’re usually better off downloading the wg conf files and using wg-quick up.

5·3 days agoI’m gonna go out on a limb and guess that if they had a lockable bootloader or sandbox they’d be saying so.
Would be nice to be wrong though…
Whomst is the “they” in this reply? Did you mean to reply to me?
Building and loading your own apps for tvOS isn’t hard but the instructions are always written for Xcode in its native environment (macos, formerly osx of xcode fame). You may have no problem setting up a vm for that, already have some device that runs macos natively or run into an infinite amount of roadblocks that you can’t surpass.
In the last case be careful what insane unofficial smarttube app you settle on.
You could also, and I wasn’t able to come up with a better way to put this because I’m not very smart so apologies if it seems like an attack, not watch youtube on the tv.
If you want scrollwork you use a scroll saw. If you want molding you use a router table.
If you want to make some other distro look like Omarchy you use an llm.
The distro of which youre trying to duplicate the setup you had is very ai forward. If youre trying to do something the omarchy way that would be using ai.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Why isn't there a compositor agnostic Wayland API for window focusing?
1·4 days agoI do whenever possible. If you’ll remember, I replied to the ops query about why wayland is the way it is.
A better question is why are you replying to me over and over again asking circular questions?
Mozilla vpn used to be a rebrand of mullvad. Might still be.
