If our eyes can absorb oxygen from tears then they can certainly do so when submerged provided the water is sufficiently oxygenated.

In those cases there is an understanding that the roomba isn’t actually sentient, people are just choosing to suspend disbelief for the sake of play. The relationships people are forming with AI are far more serious, and the people engaging in them have developed an emotional dependence on the delusion that the AI is sentient.
Only reason it’s so jarring is the context has people parsing the whole list as language and they weren’t expecting to have to abruptly parse a mathematical expression.
My dog is very cat-like in that she enjoys her personal space. She also enjoys your personal space, and will abruptly invade it when she feels like, just don’t think that gives you permission to do the same to her lol.
Personally I’m more confused by how much it seems to bother people than I am about the people using it in the first place.

We’re all criminals one way or another, some of us get away with it and others don’t. If I were a corrupt cop fishing for a reason to throw you in a cell I’d find one in short order.
Before you can throw a revolution you have to build a revolutionary society. Without that it’s nothing but a coup.
I did this after my first girlfriend broke up with me… in middle school. This is insecure adolescent boy behavior, anyone doing this kind of thing as an adult is maladjusted.
Well, it is a story about God flooding the entire earth and sparing only one family because humanity was too sinful. A bit less Disney and a bit more brothers’ Grimm.
Here is the original Sydney Sweeney “jeans” ad that sparked the controversy. AE took this one down and replaced it with versions that are less overt so that people who hear about the controversy will see those instead and not understand what the fuss is about, even if they are typically more clued in.
And here is the Dunkin donuts ad, which IMO is even more overt with the reference to “color analysis.”
Standing alone these ads have plausible deniability, but they feature attractive white actors bragging about their good genetics in the context of the president surrounding himself with and appealing to white supremacists and RFK Jr re-popularizing eugenics.
Edit: I personally haven’t seen the Arby’s one, and I’m not going to go looking for it. This bullshit has me feeling angry and bitter precisely because it is meant to fly under the radar for most people and make those calling it out sound crazy. I’m going to touch grass instead of further torturing myself.
Schmoo@slrpnk.netto Games@lemmy.world•The curse of ‘Disco Elysium’, the greatest RPG ever madeEnglish115·24 days agoThe main character starts the game literally giving himself a traumatic brain injury by drowning himself in alcohol. It’s not really the kind of RPG where you can play a self-insert, the player character is an actual character with his own backstory. Not being able to make good choices because of the player character’s personal trauma and limitations is part of the story that the game is telling.
Schmoo@slrpnk.netto Australia@aussie.zone•‘Why didn’t you tell me?’: the Australian push to have all adopted people told their full history and identityEnglish10·24 days agoWouldn’t it be better to just make that information available on request? Make it known that they can retrieve that information at any time, but they don’t have to if they prefer not to know.
Seriously, watch the ad we’re talking about before making a fool of yourself.
These aren’t just commercials with “white representation,” they are promoting eugenics. Seriously, go watch them. It’s not even subtle.
Edit: getting downvoted on Lemmy for rightly pointing out that these ads are evoking eugenicist ideas is not what I expected. I thought Lemmy was more tuned in than this. Having white actors bragging about their superior genes goes beyond just being “white representation” and is instead a white supremacist and eugenicist dogwhistle. You guys really think that’s a reach? Have you just not seen the full ads and are only reacting to this image?
diversity in cowmilk output (lol) in cows for a farmer isnt something desirable, atleast one area i know something about.
Surely you’ve noticed that this only applies to a population that is being exploited as a resource and prioritizes a specific trait or traits that are desirable to the exploiter rather than traits that contribute to the organism’s well-being. That’s what eugenics is, and what you are advocating for. It is not better for humanity or even for the individual to eradicate autism, it is better for our exploiters.

Our immune system is trained how to differentiate between what is supposed to be there and what isn’t only on things floating around in the blood. Certain parts of the human body - like the liquids inside our eyes - are permanently isolated from the bloodstream, and so our immune system will never have encountered anything like it. That’s why if it ever enters the bloodstream it can trigger an immune response.
