News@lemmy.world•Trump official refuses to say where foreign beef to lower prices is coming fromEnglish
49·2 months agoThere’s a really good video linked in one of the other threads that specifies the type of beef being imported(essentially beef sludge used as filler by fast food restaurants) and highlights a couple of other key points.
The two important ones are that Argentina consumes about 70% of its domestically produced beef and would never have this large of a surplus of beef byproduct in a short amount of time AND that the EU is banning Brazilian beef starting September 3rd due to antimicrobial and antibacterial contamination.
So, it’s likely that the fast food industry is getting cheap contaminated filler to keep margins high while the politicians can claim a win for grocery prices coming down - even though that won’t happen.
I’ll link the video if I can find it.

politics @lemmy.world•MEGA THREAD - 2023 Ohio Special Election - Voters Reject Issue 1English
15·3 years agoThank you for this. I live in Ohio and did not know this law existed. I have not heard it brought up in any discussion or news coverage (although I admit my decision was made early and have not spent much time listening to the ‘debates’). Did LaRose and company offer any reason as to why they think HB 458 does not apply in this case?

I was not either and looked it up.
They’re referring to that corridor being one of the largest in terms of supply chain for the rest of the county.
A slow down in that supply chain is an indicator of weak retail demand.
I can’t quantify anything for you, but it sounds like another indicator that the stock market doesn’t actually represent how well ‘the economy’ is doing.
