  • Yea I thought of that name because that’s the phrasing used by the organization at my former university, which I know has done good work. In case you find any helpful resources, their website is here: https://www.amssasc.ca/

I’m sure there are many other excellent organizations out there.

Typically the type of content you can’t post on my communities

Yea that’s my bad, I haven’t kept up with that community since subscribing to it a few years ago. It looks like the discussion in that community has gotten less focussed and shifted towards discussing areas of controversy. I agree it’s not the kind of stuff you’d want for your community.

When I first subscribed to it, it was closer to what they still have in their sidebar:

This community is first and foremost a feminist community for men and masc people, but it is also a place to talk about men’s issues with a particular focus on intersectionality.

All the more reason why your new communities will be helpful :)

  • They sure do use charged up language though

This is true, the title makes it sound like the assault was because the man was distributing poppies, but that is not confirmed. This other line in the article makes it sound like the poppies were not the inciting factor:

Police found him and the other boy later that day after reports of “a new, unrelated disturbance.”

However, this is still a very awful thing to do, regardless of whom they assaulted.

Without actually providing much details and facts.

It’s normal to not release that much information for recent incidents, especially when it involves children.

For reference, this is what the commenter is referring to. To me, it sounds like some stupid prank/tiktok thing that escalated. Since they have video of the attack, we should have more details later on:

The man, 59, is a commanding officer for the Royal Canadian Air Cadets and was supervising the distribution of Remembrance Day poppies on Sunday when two boys approached them and “blew a loud air horn directly into [the young cadets’] ears,” police said in a release on Monday.

They were outside a restaurant at The Centre on Barton, near Barton and Ottawa streets, at about 1:45 p.m. on Sunday. The man followed the boys into the restaurant “to confront them about their actions,” police said on Monday.

According to police, “a struggle ensued” and a woman who was not initially involved started assisting the boys and assaulted the victim, causing him to fall.

One of the boys hit the victim “several times,” police said, before leaving the scene. The woman also left before police arrived.

The 12-year-old boy was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and assault level one. Police found him and the other boy later that day after reports of “a new, unrelated disturbance.”

The second boy was not arrested, police say “as officers were able to see footage of the incident and determined his role/actions.”

There is also no proof that fear motivated Musk to delete the posts. He never publicly explained why he removed them. Instead, he joked about the election results on X, writing, “Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time.” He also made comments about building data centers in space, which remained on his account.

I’m not sure what the fear rumor is trying to get at. What would he be afraid of? This post makes it sound like he shared something incriminating and then deleted it

  • I don’t think he understands or cares. He is not going to be affected by made up stories about him in any significant way, but it makes it that much harder to bring truth back into politics. If you actually manage to fool one of his supporters and they find out about it, it will only make Trump’s propaganda stronger. Meanwhile if you fool someone against him and they try to cite it, they’ll lose credibility.

Trump deserves a lot of things but this one actively hurts people’s ability to push back against him.

Just add a /s or satire tag to things. Have your fun without confusing people and muddying the waters

  • @kevinsbacon@lemmy.today, can you change the title to something like “TIL about the 300 member signal groups that …”

Chatham House is an unrelated think tank with a completely separate history, and your post makes it sound like they’re behind this. If I understand it correctly, the tech bros named their signal group “Chatham House” because that’s what they wanted it to resemble.

This particular group chat is only notable because the author accidentally got added to it.

And it was just another day in Chatham House, a giant and raucous Signal group that forms part of the sprawling network of influential private chats that began during the fervid early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, and which have fueled a new alliance of tech and the US right.

But their influence flows through X, Substack, and podcasts, and constitutes a kind of dark matter of American politics and media. The group chats aren’t always primarily a political space, but they are the single most important place in which a stunning realignment toward Donald Trump was shaped and negotiated, and an alliance between Silicon Valley and the new right formed. The group chats are “the memetic upstream of mainstream opinion,” wrote one of their key organizers, Sriram Krishnan, a former partner in the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (typically styled a16z) who is now the White House senior policy adviser for AI.

Of course, these are hardly the only power group chats. Anti-Trump liberals are now coordinating their responses on Signal. There are group chats for Black political elites and morning show producers. A vast and influential parallel set of tech conversations take place on WhatsApp. There’s a big China-friendly group over on WeChat. Elite podcasters have one.

The article is interesting and worth reading, thanks for sharing it
