  • You should look up the correlation between alcohol consumption and cancer rates. It’s pretty clear-cut; the graph goes down ever so slightly down* and then keeps on rising. The “safe” limit would just be a function of how high a probability of getting cancer you’re willing to tolerate.

*Medical issues are a common reason not to drink, so the cancer rate for the total non-drinking population is appreciably higher than it would be for a healthy non-drinking individual. There’s no causation behind that drop to our knowledge.

PS: I said “cancer,” but the same principle applies to liver failure and a host of other “fun” diseases.

  • Moderate what now? According to a recent poll, 80% of Israeli Jews aren’t brothered by the suffering of Palestinians. Look up the Tel Aviv University Peace Index; Israeli society is rotten to the core. The moderate position in Israeli politics is “we should prioritize the safety of the hostages, of course without compromising the Great Patriotic War™.” The people who give enough of a shit about the genocide to act are a fringe minority among fringe minorities

now that the US has made it perfectly clear which side it’s on.

US’s been perfectly clear which side it’s on for decades; Trump is just louder about it.

  • Yeah. Before the French Revolution execution via beheading was reserved for nobles, and it was done manually using a weapon rather than via a machine. Meanwhile commoners got to have all the wonderful medieval execution methods like breaking on the wheel and burning at the stake. In the interest of Enlightenment ideals, abandoning medieval barbarism and equality between citizens the Legislative Assembly voted to do away with this system and made it so all French citizens got a execution via beheading like the nobility. However, executioners said that if the lines got too long they might have to rush their work, and a sloppy job would cause undue suffering to the condemned, defeating the point of the whole affair. This is where the clean and efficient guillotine came in. The guillotine as a tool was meant to bring the masses up, not bring the nobility down. That’s not what it’s associated with nowadays, but it’s plenty dignified compared to being hanged, drawn and quartered.

  • I mean yes, and most of the people that did ended up going to America rather than Israel. My point is that the popular myth that Israeli Jews are somehow deeply tied to the Holocaust and other horrors of fascism and that’s why they fled to Palestine is just that, a myth. Israel tries to play up that supposed connection to get Western sympathy, but again nothing of the sort exists. The parent comment is building on this myth by implying that the people of Israel are doing to others what has been done to them when in reality that’s not true.
