If outspoken MAGA Republicans need to talk about these issues to get ahead, I’ll take it. That still tells me that their base is getting disillusioned by the administration’s actions. It’s still going to push them more left.

She is now talking about women’s issues, worker’s issues, leaving the GOP, and calling the genocide in Gaza a genocide. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I see hope for her.
The MAGA mindset comes to people who become contrarian. They accept the first narrative that counters the established narrative. Maybe the MAGA movement has gained so much acceptance that she is now finding left-wing views more contrarian than her old views. Maybe this is copium? Guess we’ll see.
JillyB@beehaw.orgto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•In the United States, what makes a 'libertarian' right wing?5·11 days agoThat’s not true. Some of the original libertarians were socialists. I had a libertarian phase once upon a time. One thing that was very apparent was that nobody could agree on what libertarianism meant. The only thing they seemed to agree on was that the government should be smaller. The maga movement has adopted the libertarian label for some reason. Despite the government, especially the authoritarian elements being expanded. In the current climate, anybody that proudly claims to be libertarian is either pretending the meaning hasn’t changed, or is a maga idiot. Even Penn Jillette, one of the most outspoken libertarians, has since shed the label.

If individual cities have different sales taxes, that would make it hard. Personally, I still don’t find this to be a good reason. Just charge a single amount anyway and eat the costs in the high tax area. Price it in.
Edit: now that I’m thinking about it, many chain businesses are franchised. So each McDonald’s (for example) is independently owned. So they couldn’t just eat the cost in those areas.

JillyB@beehaw.orgto Chicago@midwest.social•Frustration over people parking on bus stops..English1·21 days agoThere is a program meant to enforce that. Cameras will automatically ticket cars in bus or bike lanes. At first it’s just cameras in a few dedicated cars patrolling a small area of the city. Supposedly they’re also installing some cameras on a few buses. Idk why the slow rollout. This seems like such an easy win.

I’m not saying you can’t burn significant calories by exercising but the effort needed is way more than simply not drinking 3 beers. Also most exercise isn’t going to burn 800+ calories. The only way an average person is hitting those kind of numbers is if they have an intense manual labor job.
JillyB@beehaw.orgto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How do you lose alot of fat quickly with no exercise?9·21 days agoHaving a calorie deficit is the only way to lose weight. Everybody knows that. Exercise actually burns very few calories. There are many other health benefits to exercising but weight loss isn’t really one of them.
In my experience, a calorie deficit is much easier if you eat better foods, rather than try to eat smaller portions of unhealthy foods. More fiber keeps you feeling full for longer. Find ways to incorporate lots more vegetables in your diet. I keep apples around for when I want a snack. I make bean tacos instead of chorizo (maybe I’ll mix a little chorizo in), etc. Find sauces and ways to spice up veggies. Don’t worry if your sauces and dressings are the most healthy. Just getting the vegetables is the most important.
Also cut back on drinking of you do that a lot. Lots more calories in alcohol than people realize.
“The South will rise again” folks were right. They just had a much longer timeline than we imagined.
If everyone is on a list, how valuable is the list?
I fucked up. It’s Neuromancer btw
It seems like you like Sci-Fi. I recommend Necromancer if you want to read one of the founding works of cyberpunk. Also Hyperion of you want some heavy religious themes.

During the pandemic, I adopted a policy of unsubbing to any subreddit that made me angry. Usually this came in the form of people bringing up trump/capitalism/whatever out of completely nowhere. luckily the Beehaw people seem to be pretty good about actually having conversations and not just devolving into mocking trump every second. But whenever I venture into some of the other instances, I see some of Lemmy’s true colors. Chronically online people completely out of touch with reality kinda run shit around here.

I think you’re overselling the importance of this one. When I’ve talked to friends about federated alternatives, they really aren’t interested. Even if they hated Twitter/reddit and think they’ve gotten worse, they just don’t really care about a federated alternative. I’ve heard some interest in threads, so maybe we count that?

I lived there for a while. I realized any meeting of foreigners would eventually devolv into everyone trading stories about how they’d been discriminated against that week. I met so many Japanese who were friendly and open and wanted to get to know me. But when you needed to get something done, you’d find office-workers, managers, cashier’s, post office workers, etc would rather just not deal with you. We called it the gaijin card when you would be especially rude and assertive to get your way. It often worked but it sucked having to be a dick just to get basic respect.
