Ilovemyirishtemper@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What has been the biggest surprise about getting older?191·2 years agoI think it’s that you don’t feel older mentally. I though I would feel a certain maturity once I reached an age where I had a solid, advancing career and owned a house. Turns out, I feel pretty much the same and am just better at dealing with things that arise and pretending that I’m mature. My body hurts more and my face looks older, but I don’t feel all that different. I’m sure I’ve mentally changed to some extent, and I notice it more when I talk to younger people, but I still feel the same.
Ilovemyirishtemper@lemmy.worldto A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•She Was Supplementing Her Income4·2 years agoSadly, the low pay for teachers is pretty pervasive across the entire US. My first teaching job paid $36k per year in Wisconsin in 2013. Luckily, rent wasn’t quite so expensive back then, but it’s still an outrageously low income for what is expected from teachers. I don’t know a single teacher who either doesn’t have a second job or a spouse that makes quite a bit of money.

So day 1 is 50k, day 2 is an additional 100k, and day 3 is an additional 200k. 3 days = 350k. I agree that it’s not enough, but if they dug their heels in, it would grow really high, really fast, so it was a pretty effective fine.
Ilovemyirishtemper@lemmy.worldto Reddit@lemmy.world•The Reddit Protest Is Finally Over. Reddit Won.103·2 years agoI agree with you. Actually, Lemmy woke me up to how much reddit had already been enshitified. I didn’t realize that I had stopped commenting altogether because the subs were so big that either no one saw your stuff, or there was always some one pissed off who felt the need to respond. Lemmy reminds me of reddit the way it was when I joined 12 years ago.
Ilovemyirishtemper@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Some cities are digging up water mains and leaving lead pipe in the ground2·2 years agoThere is a project to replace them in my city, but there are something like 60,000+ homes that need to be switched over and they only get to a few hundred each year.
If there is nothing wrong with the lateral, the city will pay for the half that is on their side and you pay the other half. That is fair, but you’re still shelling out $4,200 for your half, which basically doubles your taxes for the year. A lot of people can’t afford that, especially right now.
The people who can’t afford to have it fixed are then drinking lead filled water and giving lead tainted water to their children, causing expensive cognitive issues that impact education costs and incarceration rates in the future.
So maybe the people complaining are conservatives who want to have their cake and eat it too, but no matter who the complainers are, this is an issue that needs to be addressed because it impacts us all.
The Americans who spout off about things like standing up to tyranny and how much they love having guns are not the same people participating in this protest. The government is actively supporting those people.
The protesters are the ones expecting the rule of law to eventually win, but also know how important it is to protest so that the rule of law continues to exist. It may not be as violent as you’re expecting, but it seems to me that they are walking the walk.
We haven’t done this in a while and we’re a little rusty, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t fighting.
