Oh, okay, it’s the US, makes sense now.
How is this legal?
I was one of those millions. The great thing was that it was not only the main arteries, Budapest for example has literally hundreds of lines that were served by 260s and 280s, and while they weren’t the most comfortable rides compared to models that were 30 years younger, the very fact that you could get shitfaced in downtown Budapest and get home safely with one of these to your home in the middle of nowhere even late at night, no matter where from, no matter where to, was awesome. All for the price of like 15 EUR a month, with unlimited rides.
Same with countryside buses, you can get from any small village to any other small village pretty easily and the network is still reasonably dense despite the people running it being equally very dense.
Technically this type of trolleybus also has a battery for very short runs so it can run between power lines.
The last one was a temporary conversion of a 260 into a railbus near Pusztaszabolcs, and it ran on diesel which made sense as a lot of Hungarian lines were not - and still are not - electrified. It later got converted back because the large wheelbase made it struggle with turns on the line.
These small lines in Hungary are usually serviced by BzMot diesel trains.
I got it from Hungarian Wikipedia https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sínautóbusz
Yeah but it doesn’t matter what the objective of the scraper is, the only thing that matters is that it’s an automated client that is going to send mass requests to you. If it wasn’t, Anubis would not be a problem for it.
The effect is the same, increased hosting costs and less access for legitimate clients. And sites want to defend against it.
That said, it is not mandatory, you can avoid using Anubis as a host. Nobody is forcing you to use it. And as someone who regularly gets locked out of services because I use a VPN, Anubis is one of the least intrusive protection methods out there.
I raise you the Ikarus 260. Still in service for whatever fucking reason.
Also works as an electric bus since the 80s. This one is the maintenance service special.
Also, as a train apparently.
The dotcom bubble’s time still had some US antitrust enforcement, like with Microsoft and its browser dominance. It was an easier time.
I feel this attempt might be more successful.
They will try to fire everyone they can pointing to AI, and keep faking growth using the stock market as competition has been dead for a long time.
It’s not the “sentient computers killing everyone” that is the problem, it’s the psychopaths owning the text generators establishing a fascist regime.
And call the top layers tumbling down “legacy”
AI does not triple traffic. It’s a completely irrational statement to make.
Multiple testimonials from people who host sites say they do. Multiple Lemmy instances also supported this claim.
I would bet that the number of requests per year of s resource by an AI scrapper is on the dozens at most.
You obviously don’t know much about hosting a public server. Try dozens per second.
There is a booming startup industry all over the world training AI, and scraping data to sell to companies training AI. It’s not just Microsoft, Facebook and Twitter doing it, but also Chinese companies trying to compete. Also companies not developing public models, but models for internal use. They all use public cloud IPs, so the traffic is coming from all over incessantly.
Using as much energy as a available per scrapping doesn’t even make physical sense. What does that sentence even mean?
It means that Microsoft buys a server for scraping, they are going to be running it 24/7, with the CPU/network maxed out, maximum power use, to get as much data as they can. If the server can scrape 100 sites per minute, it will scrape 100 sites. If it can scrape 1000, it will scrape 1000, and if it can do 10, it will do 10.
It will not stop scraping ever, as it is the equivalent of shutting down a production line. Everyone always uses their scrapers as much as they can. Ironically, increasing the cost of scraping would result in less energy consumed in total, since it would force companies to work more “smart” and less “hard” at scraping and training AI.
Oh, and it’s S-C-R-A-P-I-N-G, not scrapping. It comes from the word “scrape”, meaning to remove the surface from an object using a sharp instrument, not “scrap”, which means to take something apart for its components.
Yeah it’s called chaos engineering and it can be fun.
Websites were under a constant noise of malicious requests even before AI, but now AI scraping of Lemmy instances usually triples traffic. While some sites can cope with this, this means a three-fold increase in hosting costs in order to essentially fuel investment portfolios.
AI scrapers will already use as much energy as available, so making them use more per site measn less sites being scraped, not more total energy used.
And this is not DDoS, the objective of scrapers is to get the data, not bring the site down, so while the server must reply to all requests, the clients can’t get the data out without doing more work than the server.
So do you have the president of the central bank steal a third of your yearly GDP while you get taxed 45% on your income, 32% on everything you buy, and also on random bullshit?
Amateurs.
Would the US Navy be able to block every Chinese container ship to approach the whole of the Americas? Note, they aren’t warships, they are there for trade, legitimate trade actually. Would it be able to stop every ship the Chinese might be able to charter? Even searching those ships would be an insane task. Would they be able to check under every crate of bananas whether there is a guided missile hiding in there? Would they be able to do that without the oligarchs who will be bleeding money screeching bloody murder?
It would effectively have the US sanction itself, and cause the US to have larger problems than Mexican insurgents. Like the dollar being worth nothing. It’s not 1940 anymore. The world is in this together, and our economies are tightly coupled enough that even sanctioning regional players like Russia have dire economic consequences.
And China would already be happy that the US is spending all that money maneuvering carrier groups around looking for 200 dollar assault rifles. Same logic as in Ukraine, one dollar spent in aid causes fifty in damage to the invaders’ economy. And China can outmanufacture the US easily at this point.
But that should be accounted for, otherwise the whole graph is pointless.
BTW Hungary is also off, because the amount of days off depends on your age.
The only real info from this whole map is that everywhere in the world except the US there is a concept of holidays.
The EU and the US is giving Ukraine weapons because every bunch of old tech we give them means one less Russian armored division we need to worry about.
Why would China not do the same and fire up a whole bunch of container ships loaded with old shit and drop it off in Latin America? How long would it take for the US occupation force to start to find Chinese missile launchers and drones taking Abrams platoons to the cleaners?
And if the US started a Mexican occupation, do you think the whole of Latin America would just look on, or rather drift into a Chinese sphere of influence as a result? How long until you had Chinese military presence in Panama for example? Imagine a blockade on US trade in Panama, enforced by Chinese anti-ship missiles.
It would be the mother of all clusterfucks.
The US military is far more competent than Russsia.
But it will not remain so. A dictatorship needs a pyramid of incompetence, the most competent person in the military needs to be Trump, he will hire only less competetnt people, and it cascades from there. The Russians are incompetent not because they are worse as people, but because their society is organised the way Trump wants to remake the US as.
Just to mention, just a few months after taking command, two US Navy fighter jets were lost as they slid off a carrier deck as per the official account, which I expect to be as accurate as the Russian accounts of smoking soldiers blowing up ammo dumps. The real thing is going to be much more embarassing if this is what they admit to.
Why do we call oligarchs by their first names as if they were relatable?
I hear the JSDF is rearming, and is pissed off that Trump is being an idiot.
Hear me out, Pearl Harbor 2.0, can’t go tits up.
