It depends, really? 2km of well maintained sidewalks and walkable streets is very different from 2km of no sidewalks and unprotected highway crossings. The school I went to as a kid specifically banned walking home because we had the latter and a kid had got hit and killed because of it.

Honestly this, it feels like the real reason AI has been pushed so hard across the board is just accountability shifting. From healthcare denials to literal war crimes, doesn’t matter, an “AI” “did it” so suddenly no one is to blame.

Of course, in a functioning society we would just say the people who enacted the decision of blindly trusting the black box is the perpetrator, but we don’t, so…

This isn’t really an age thing, if you look at stats. Yes, the older age groups both have more victims and larger losses than younger people. But the victim count isn’t so much lower that you can just brush it off as people being senile. Or are all the gen x and millennial victims senile too?

A lot of scams can fall into one of two categories. Scare people and activate their fight or flight mode (locked computer, threaten to have the cops show up, etc) and the second prey on poor people (send us money to authorize this big payment to you, buy this penny stock that we totally didn’t pump before, etc)

Yeah, this same exact story keeps coming up for years now just with different names. Why anyone would think that both the ineffectiveness and racial bias in these systems either wouldn’t exist or will somehow go away eventually is beyond me. Just expensive and ineffective mass surveillance for the sake of it…
