  • I mean, it’s probably just up to whoever first started doing it. They chose that song, so it’s that song. Other songs may have also worked.

But there is one thing that I think gave Rick Astley an advantage over specific other groups like A-ha. And that’s his name. If you look up the history of Rickrolling on Wikipedia, it says it replaced a meme called “duckrolling”, which was used the same way as Rickrolling, but it was just a picture of a duck with wheels. So the advantage is that “Rick” is his name and it’s an easy drop-in replacement for the word “duck”.

There’s other artists who have names that would work. Who knows? In another universe, they might have “Beckrolling” or something.

Edit: I was just reading farther into the Wikipedia article, and the guy who made the first Rickroll said he chose it because it came out in his birth year of 1987.

  • It is a great song. I think that is one reason it works so well for the meme.

    Great song

Very distinctive and ear catching drums to start the song

The first time you see the video, you’re probably surprised that he’s a smallish white guy

His dancing in the video is… extremely white?

I think if it was actually a bad song, it would never have caught on as a meme, and that the people who hate the song are either overexposed to it or their opinion of the song is heavily influenced by how it’s been presented to them. You know, like how if you tell a child that some bit of food is gross, then they often won’t like it when they taste it.

  • They had to do that because it’s a death cult. A Christian’s goal is to die and go to heaven as quickly as possible, so if they let them commit suicide, then that’s the fastest way to heaven.

And then, of course, murder is a sin, or else the best thing a Christian could do is blow up a Christian church while it’s full of worshipers.

Actually, since murder can be forgiven, you’d think Christians would be killing each other left and right, just to help the other guy get into heaven faster without them committing suicide.

Even if murder couldn’t be forgiven, you’d think a Christian parent would want to kill their children right after they were baptized. Guaranteed ticket into heaven for the kids. Best thing for them. What loving parent wouldn’t sacrifice their soul for their children’s souls?

  • My evangelical aunt is extremely excited that there are signs the world might end. She’s a huge Trump supporter and a big part of her support seems to stem from his Antichrist qualities. He is going to end the world with war so he is carrying out God’s plan.

The whole thing is idiotic. If she wants to commit suicide, she should just do it herself. No need to take everyone else along with her.

I’m going to say one good thing about Musk below. It’s probably the only good thing I will ever say about him going forward.

The American car industry is a cesspool led by some of the biggest villains who exist. The existing car manufacturers were not heavily investing in EV. They liked the status quo. Also, the barrier to entry for any new car company is extremely high, as well. For example, a lot of states have laws passed requiring car manufacturers to sell from traditional dealerships, which is specifically to stop new small car companies from succeeding.

Because of this massive corruption in America, I fully expected that any EV developments would start internationally. You’d have to be a complete moron who was also flush with money to try to fight them. And then Elon Musk came onto the scene. He was a complete moron who was flush with money.

I don’t know that Musk pushed the EV industry forward, but he certainly pushed the American EV industry forward. If Musk had been smarter, he’d have tried something more reliable with his money, and he wouldn’t have started an impossible fight. I know Tesla has almost bankrupt at least once since he took over. His luck stat must be off the charts.

  • Marco Rubio said what I assume is the actual truth. Israel told us they were going to carry out the attack, and the US agreed to go along with it at the last second.

He also said what I think was a lie in the same explanation, that if Israel had attacked alone, then we knew Iran would attack the US and so we had to strike first to limit US casualties.

It’s a pathetic loser of a reason, that we can’t stand up to Israel. No wonder everyone else in the Trump administration has been lying about it non-stop.

Had Israel attacked alone and had we subsequently been attacked, do we really think there would have been far more US casualties? It seems dubious to me, based on the history, but I am not an expert.

If Iran did attack us like that, then we’d have complete justification for joining at that point.

  • Speaking of toxic masculinity, I remember Joe Rogan during Covid saying that he decided to stop masking and isolating because it made him “feel like a pussy” IIRC.

It’s weird to me because in my view, a strong person doesn’t care what other people think of them. Rogan’s actions just seem extraordinarily cowardly and weak to me.

Like, he needed to eat elk meat to feel like a man? I understand we all have negative thoughts like that, but to be compelled to act out of your own fears doesn’t strike me as masculine in the least.

Is that a part of toxic masculinity? That it’s centered around fear of judgment and a low sense of self worth? That they feel a need to project an image that’s exactly the opposite of how they really feel?

Because if so, then it seems like even the slightest bit of critical thinking ability would easily steer men clear of it.
