Making people think that seeing ads that interest them is a concession from the ad industry, to the point that people actively try to help advertisers sell more effectively to them by opting in to it, is the greatest piece of bullshittery I’ve ever seen in all of human history. I’ve never seen a more successful grift before or since. Jeffrey Epstein’s blackmail scheme involving the world’s billionaires has nothing on this reprehensible shit. You gotta admire it, despite it being pure unadulterated evil, regardless of whether or not it’s actually effective in the end. The fact remains, we accepted this hilariously-transparent con into our lives with open arms and actually complain when it’s not performing well enough.
Making fun of someone’s looks is unfair and childish, because they cannot help how they were born. But this bitch did it to herself on purpose and paid good money for the privilege, sooooooo…
Where’s your tricycle, you fucking lumpen balloon animal of a Saw villain?

58008@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•How Wikipedia is fighting AI slop contentEnglish8·7 days agoWould be funny if the Wikimedia Foundation developed an AI that is trained on all the major AI models, and uses that to detect AI slop.
You sculpt it into a large sphere at the source site, roll it to the pyramid location, then chip off the curves with a chisel. The leftover bits can be further crunched up into aggregate to act as cement/filler.
Also, don’t assemble the Eiffel Tower bit-by-bit. Instead, build a giant mould and pour molten metal into it, then disassemble the mould. The mould itself is constructed bit-by-bit and is far more complex and intricate than the tower but the guy who pours the metal will have an easy job. Just make sure the rest of the work is done by low-value males according to the Tate-Jordan scale, and then their labour is actually of no consequence, much like a physicist’s thought experiment that excludes gravity to make it work.

Now John Indiegame doesn’t need to worry about the Collective Shout campaign. The scumbags with the army of lawyers and endless rivers of money will take care of things.

Soulseek (and I recommend the Nicotine+ client over the official one) is a fantastic source for all music in all formats, and particularly obscure off-label shit you won’t get anywhere else. You’ll even have some success finding audiobooks there, although this is very hit-and-miss. I wish audiobook pirates would use it more heavily. It’s P2P, like Napster used to be. You’ll have to share something or you’ll get auto-ignored by most users.
RuTracker is a great non-private/non-ratio-monitoring torrent site for music (does require a free account though). I’ve never had a single torrent from there that wasn’t seemingly seeded by a Godzilla’s dick. Obviously it’s in Russian, but there’s really no difficulty navigating around. The only thing you might struggle with is signing up for an account, but just have your favourite translation tool open in another tab 👍
If you don’t mind slow download speeds (from the likes of RapidGator), I enjoy Exystence. It’s a blog that shares link to the latest albums and offers both lossy and lossless versions. Nice RSS subscription to have.
If you do find yourself using RapidGator a lot, don’t waste money buying a sub directly from them, it’s insanely pricey. Instead, get a reseller like Real Debrid, which costs like 10% as much and also covers you for about two-dozen other file hosters. I highly recommend putting as much distance between your credit card and the company as possible, just for safety reasons. Using PaySafeCard is fine, as Real Debrid will never see your details in that case. I don’t have any specific reason to be weary of them, I just don’t trust random/small/hitherto unheard of companies as a rule.
58008@lemmy.worldto Games@lemmy.world•So are GOG going to relist Devotion? Seeing how they're about freedom to buy games.English157·12 days agoI haven’t spent a dime on GOG since this happened. Fuck them. Not only is their professed anti-censorship stance fucking laughable in light of the Devotion débâcle, their game preservation efforts are even more laughable when they literally excluded a game from possible preservation because of a hoard of thin-skinned CCP hostages.
Even without that episode I would have stopped using GOG eventually, because they also went against their one selling point - no DRM - more than once. They sold Witcher 3 hard copies with online verification (you had to link it to your account with a serial number, you couldn’t just install it and play it from the disc offline). They included a little card in the box with an apology for this requirement, citing their need to protect their sales. Which is fair enough, but don’t pretend that this isn’t DRM. The fact that it was one of their own games shows how much hypocrisy they have when they complain about other developers doing the same thing. Being able to share the downloaded files freely makes me wonder why they bothered with any DRM, but bother they did.
Then they sold Hitman (2016) which has literally the most egregious and hateful DRM in the history of gaming. If you don’t submit to it, your game is essentially a very expensive demo. Most content and even basic game features like saving and progress tracking is disabled unless you’re connected to the DRM server. GOG users complained and the game was delisted, but the fact remains that they fucking tried. If GOG doesn’t even believe in being anti-DRM anymore, then I see no reason to use their [apparently] CCP-curated games library.
GOG may have started out as a plucky band of disruptors and idealists, but that dream died about 10 years ago. They’re EA cosplaying as Che Guevara. I wouldn’t even mind if they behaved like every other storefront, but it’s the pretence and the morality-washing that makes them especially despicable. I mean EA and Ubisoft aren’t feigning to be motivated by some grand political or societal good; they’re malignant capitalists who would sell their own children, and would tell you as much. GOG dons the robes of a grassroots pinko activist while dancing to the exact same corporate tune.

Nice gesture, but keep in mind that this is the same GOG that was poised to release Devotion by RedCandleGames, only to renege on it because CCP imbeciles told them to. They are brave against censorship except when it involves actual conflict with censors. As soon as that happens, it’s bootlick city.

I think we’ll eventually get to that stage - where everything is one big EU-like superstate. It would, of course, require that we don’t annihilate ourselves before then, but it seems to be the general trend at least. I doubt we’d ever get rid of borders entirely, though. Human beings are the same the world over, and should be treated as such, but the world itself is not the same everywhere. Life brings different challenges depending on where you find yourself. So there will always be a greener side of the fence for the vast majority of the population. That ‘temperature difference’ will always bring a certain conflict, and that conflict will always bring a certain siege mentality for those who are on the aforementioned greener side of the fence.
On the bright side, as climate change devastates the planet, we’ll all be living on the same 100-square-mile patch of land eventually, so this debate will be moot.
If it even partially alleviates loneliness, and if it encourages the person to become more open and confident when communicating with humans, then it’s a great thing.
