I wrote a blog post on the current trend of game decompilations using AI and where we’re going with this. It’s all very promising but oh boy are the implications scary.

Decompiling is not new. Modding games that weren’t made to be moddable is not new. Heck, Pokemon DS games have been decompiled, hacked, modded, and what have you to hell and back for decades.

Awe is not necessarily a positive emotion. Awesome and awful are almost exactly the same word.

Yeah you got awful - full of awe. Too much awe. Bad

awesome - a moderate amount. Tends to be more positive

Then, aw no - back to bad again

I’m still very cautiously optimistic about even this use of AI. For me it’s about the loss of understanding the techniques and underlying process of this type of work and any work honestly. These types of advancements affect so much more than just games and it’s like you said, both interesting and impossibly scary at the same time.

The Daily podcast just the other day had a very good interview interview with a mathematician about AI and the recent advancements of it potentially solved one of the Millennium Prize Problems that echoes your sentiments in their field.

It’s super awesome. One modicum of power shifts to consumers to control the products they buy, and the corporatists come running with their “think of the devs” arguments despite devs not being paid in royalties/residuals.
