Switching sides and defining smaller and smaller facets to identify with were at one point revolutionary acts, but imo the work’s not done until parents have a hard time explaining to their kids what a gender was

I get it, but seriously, why is it tomboy for girls and femboy for guys?
Shouldn’t it be like, tomboy for girls and Janegirl for guys?
It’s not that I care an awful lot, it’s that the thought crossed my mind and I had to share it or I would explode.
Sallygirl is the original counterpart before it fell out of use in favor of a slur (s***y) because tomboy was ok but sallygirl was discouraged. Tomgirl is more like futch or girly tomboy. Femboy is a more recent coining that doesn’t have a counterpart because we still have tomboy
I’m a bit of an outsider, so sorry if this is not appropriate. But I feel like “tomboy” is the wrong one to map to the opposite gender, as femboy is more descriptive: easier to understand Before knowing the word. So rather than suggesting to change femboy to sallygirl (or similar), would changing tomboy to “mascgirl” be more appropriate? Feel free to change my mind
We’re not even talking about changing anything. Just let people use the labels they feel fit them. I’m sharing the history I experienced pre-internet.
Tomboy and Sallygirl were coined together first and I read them in a yellowed readers digest type magazine in the upstairs bathroom at my grandparents house while I was small.

Wikipedia gives Janegirl rather than Sallygirl, but they may be wrong. Yet I haven’t met any of this words in real life. I find both cuter than s***y which come with so much other meanings…
Janegirl was still coined later using Tomgirl as a reference point. It’s also a bit regional but all referencing Fun with Dick and Jane.
