Animorphs. Loved those books as a kid and revisited them as an adult, and forgot how dark they got. Child soldiers, war crimes, the horrors of losing yourself to the hive mind or being forced into the body of a small animal (not talking about Tobias here).
Plus the books are also about friendship, which many youths want to see more of than romance.
At one point, Jason’s entire family is Yeerks, and he knows it. I think his mom was a Visser. They try to infect him, but he manages to get rid of the Yeerk somehow. He goes back to live with his infected family and pretends to be infected too so he can spy on the Visser possessing his mom.

Do you mean Marco or Jake? Marco’s mom was a visser, Jake’s brother was a controller
