If you look at the road system in Canada, it’s the same pattern, basically. There’s a few dirt “highways” that stretch into the northwest, and absolutely nothing connecting the northeast. All the agriculture and so all the sizeable cities are in the south.
Actually, Russia has a lot more going on up there. As you can see the Russian homeland stretches pretty continuously up, and even in the colonial areas further east, they have mid-sized arctic city Norilsk (that disconnected bit of red). The best we can do is Yellowknife at 10,000.
not even that, it’s more like the quebec-windsor corridor and friends…
Between The Corridor and The Praries there’s like 2 populated areas, and even around vancouver the population density plunges down a cliff the second you leave the metro area.
I still take Via Rail whenever I have to go to Toronto, Ottawa or Quebec from Montreal, and it’s so convenient and relaxing to go from home to somewhere in another city entirely by rail the whole way. Especially compared to the circus that is flying today. But why does it have to be so dogdamn slooooow. And I wish there were more than a couple viable destinations for someone who doesn’t want to drive everywhere.
Man, if only Canada could even have what Germany does in the middle of the night.
