I just discovered this game, I’m on my third base, it’s my first one that’s not totally screwed over and kind of functions.
The base got attacked by a pack of mad wolves. One of my colonists fought off three, but her leg was ripped off in the melee.
She was the only one who could operate the machine mill, so after a lot of rest she hauled steel across the base, milled her own prosthetic leg, and when I checked her stats the only thing keeping her from a mental break was a bonus for loving her work!
Then my retired/marooned assassin, now the colony doctor and janitor, attached the leg and she’s back to normal, just with a lot of scars and no nose.
This game generates some really fun and memorable moments, it’s amazing
I will also not forget my first base. A visitor walked in to my camp to find a bunch of starving people, two in drug dependency caused comas, everything covered in blood, vomit, or both, and a half eaten corpse on the table. They still traded with us, but not having anyone who could clearly communicated meant they overcharged us.
I have a guy in my colony, Horse, an important miner and animal handler who lost an ear to frostbite in the first winter (I didn’t know how cold it got in the mountains and nearly lost everything). But lo what luck, a trader was selling a cochlear implant, so I bought it. On install, the surgery failed. So I made another cochlear, tried to install it, failed again. Tried again, failed catastrophically and he lost an eye in the surgery!
While waiting for another to be made, he was taming a wolf accidentally (a different person had a taming inspiration and I wanted them to get the wolf, but horse YOLOed after it before I could stop him), the taming failed and the wolf bit his other ear off. Now Horse is deaf in both ears and blind in one eye. Finally my doctor installs a cochlear successfully. Then I go after a bionic eye in a quest offer with a squad of shooters, and get the eye. Install it successfully. Then the other cochlear is done successfully. Then Horse finally is whole again after 5 long years. All because I forgot to get him a parka to wear
After a while you’ll encounter some unique circumstances where you can do unconventional things. And it will leave you wondering , “Did I just commit a crime against humanity?” and “Am I still a good person?”
I decided to raise a fox farm, and make foxfur pants and parkas and sell them for profit.
I tamed two arctic foxes, and let them breed. A couple game years later, I had over 250 foxes, most of them female and pregnant, winter came, and I ran out of hay and veg to make kibble, they were all dying and having miscarriages of malnutrition so I had to slaughter all but 4 of them so I could just keep my eight horses alive. It was an absolute bloodbath. Now I know to cull them before winter starts, and let them breed in spring only. Limited myself to 80 foxes total for sustainable fur production.
just with a lot of scars and no nose.
So many missing noses, fingers, toes haha.
I’ve never been quite good enough to build out the massive bases like other people have but just seeing the random stories evolve during gameplay is fun on its own.
