if/when you create your account, to view nsfw you must enable it in your profile! I’m looking into fixing this

Xaeg/Yay was the owner of LemmyNSFW, and he had access to and paid for the domain, server, and everything else related to the site. He has been AWOL for about 6 months now, and suddenly this month, the server and the domain stopped being paid for. I have no access to the server to get the database.

Because of this LemmyNSFW as it was, and all the content on it, much to my dismay, seems to have died.

So what now?

In my opinion, and I feel many other people’s opinion as well, the fediverse needs a place for NSFW! A place run ethically while also allowing people to (within reason) explore their kinks, sexuality, etc. as they please.

So I have created FediNSFW to be that place! It is a piefed instance instead of a lemmy one because if there’s one thing NSFW content benefits from it’s good moderation tools and flairs, and piefed has those things.

As for now I have access to the DNS records to the lemmynsfw domain but there seems to be another dns setup that I don’t have access to, in four months the ownership of the site will lapse, and I will try to aquire it so I have full control of it. Until then, I had no choice but to create this new site.

I am, as of now, the sole admin and owner of the site!

Now hosting is NOT free by any means, and I assume costs will rise, so I have created accounts on a few platforms so that people who would like to can donate.I plan to keep this site going as long as I can, and the more donations the site receives, the easier that will be!

I will NEVER ask anyone to pay to enter the site, this is purely voluntary.

The Future

I will slowly build out some of the formerly existing communities based on some snapshots of lemmynsfw from the wayback machine. But it would be much easier with the help of the community, so logically, I am looking for admins and mods!

  • If you would like a community to be made and you’re willing to check up on it and maybe make some posts here and there please make it! NOTE: for security reasons your account must be 24 hours old to create a community

  • If you were a mod of a community message me and I will get that community created and add you as a mod!

  • If you’d like to be an admin, obviously there will have to be some trust between you and I and you may need to be up to the task of potentially doing some sysadmin work. But message me on here or preferably on matrix if you’re interested!

Piefed Info

Piefed is another Federated, open‑source social media platform similar to reddit, but as mentioned before it has better moderation tools like :

  • tagging and flairs

  • the ability to add plugins

  • built in automod tools

  • and more!

I will most likely be adding alternative ui’s to the site in the near future, but as of now the vanilla ui will have to do, the setup process for this site was a bit of a headache! 😅

    When you have the chance could you talk about how to go about preventing fedinsfw from experiencing the same fate as lemmynsfw please? I’m hesitant to invest in another fedi instance reliant on a single person is all 😬

    I can also volunteer for sysadmin work (infrastructure/devops is my profession) if I can be useful 👍

      I plan to set up the accounts related to the site to be accessible by other admins, I’ll probably host a password manager on the site’s server, or maybe just create an account one of the popular ones, with relevant credentials in it. That way if something happens and I disappear they can just login and take over. That’s part of why I’m actively recruiting admins.

      As far as cost goes FOR NOW I can fully afford the cost of the server without donations, as far as I can tell at least. Currently the donations are just set to go into my personal account, but I would love to get to the point where we can set something up like or maybe joining the fedihosting foundation and have a pool of donations accessible without me.

        Really appreciate the work!

        Highly recommend not hosting a password manager on your webhost. There are myriad security issues, but also reliabilty problems. Losing access to the host might mean losing access to all the other services as well.

        Id recommend going with hosted Bitwarden. Their free accounts can be shared with others.

    Sad times. So much content was lost. I had kind of burnt out and wasn’t posting much these days, but now that it’s gone I realize how much I miss it.

    Thanks for this, I know the easy path is to let things die out, it’s a lot more work to recreate it. There are a lot of things I like about this new site already, video support for one, future posting, AI labels, tags sounds promising, but I imagine it’s going to be a lot more expensive. Hope it takes off!

    I thought long and hard about making a /0 account, but after fmhy and lemmyNSFW died around me I thought I was done with it all. But here you are, giving me hope again.

      Unfortunately no, because the site is down there’s now way to retrieve any data, but you can still view those posts if you create an account on lemmy.world and search your username, then at least you could save the photos and repost them if you like

      Edit: it looks like images uploaded directly to the site are broken so your photos just have thumbnails :(

      the owner and main admin of lemmy nsfw hasn’t responded to messages in over 6 months at this point, he stopped paying for things seemingly, and the site just went down one day. I didn’t have backups, or access to the vps/server it was hosted on, so I started this instance.

    Do you have any recommendations for community creation by people that have no experience or interest in moderating? There are a number of my favorites that I thought about recreating and seeding with my respective LemmyNSFW downloads, but I don’t want to be in charge of them.

    Finally some good news!! Thank you so much for putting this together. I idly checked lemmynsfw this morning after losing hope last month and whoa you did it, you rescued the nsfwverse.

    I don’t know if I can put in words what it means to me to have a space like this on the internet. Like the walls are really closing in and the things I liked about the web are almost all gone or ruined. Just having a place for shitposting and boobs, not overrun by Nazis or bots, seemed like it was maybe actually too much to ask for in currentyear.

    Just donated $55. Thanks again for doing this, seriously.
