And if you look closer at the verbiage and the way they are known to operate, you are highly likely to be “on the clock” for 50 but only paid for 40. Then deduct standard taxes from that and you end up with way less than if you had been smart about things and they paid fairly per mile, etc.
Considering how clueless the lawmakers are here in the states about this stuff (despite best of intentions), I wouldn’t expect this arrangement to be any better than being free to cherry pick the best offers, best times to work, etc. The beauty of being IC is being able to say fuck that, not doing that one. What I fear about this is that the gig workers will have to accept bullshit offers to keep their metrics in the right zone so they don’t get “fired”.

It’s a start but even if you are guaranteed that amount per hour worked you can still end up making way less after operating expenses unless they are also pushing the companies to reimburse for mileage on top of a min hourly. I drive for a living, uber, etc and I run my own service. When you are self employed in most industries, hourly is actually counter productive to profitability and success.
I would absolutely NOT work this kind of job for as little as $20/hour even if that included mileage reimbursement. If you track your earnings hourly then most days you will have an hour or two where you make like $10/hour or less and then it goes nuts and you clear $100 or more in an hour or two or less sometimes. One of the benefits of being self employed is the various tax benefits depending on the country you live/work in. I’m in the USA where I can deduct 64.5c/mile iirc but if I was getting reimbursed I may not be able to take that deduction which would mean I earn less after taxes. Not to mention the control these companies have over drivers when they are considered employees versus independent.

Seriously. This is so much bullshit. The bigger operations are out in the north west where hydro power is abundant and cheap. I’m sure plenty of others have made moves to run on solar or wind as well. Power costs make or break profitability for a crypto mine.

I don’t disagree with you at all. Problem is that what this would cost to implement across the country is not likely to be funded and supported by tax payers any time soon.
What I would like to see and would make happen if/when I have the capital is smaller “downtowns” around the city. Draw people and traffic away from the current city center and some of those spaces could be off limits to cars.
Some of you really need to brush up on your history and get your head out of the clouds. We can definitely have spaces and communities that are better and safer for people to walk and bike but we are never going to get rid of larger vehicles, period, the end.
As for my situation. I’m going to be blunt here. Fuck no. I’m not going to take the bus to Costco and drag that much stuff on the bus and then have to carry, drag, whatever, fuck knows how far from the stop to my house.
I’ll say this and I’m done. We have never had cities like we do now that were based on walking/cycling. First it was walking combined with horse back or camel, etc and then it was horse and buggy and then trains and then gas powered vehicles that could haul more and go further without need for rest.

You need to be better. The article says there was a passenger in the car, I’m sure they can and will testify as to exactly what happened.
Again. This wasn’t a mowing down of anyone and it was a situation that even human drivers wouldn’t have been able to avoid.
I’m accepting that statement from waymo at face value until given reason not to. There are likely witnesses including the aforementioned passenger. Waymo is the one who called the cops. You need to take a breath and stop letting your hatred of vehicles larger than a bicycle color your take on things. It’s not healthy and it will lead to stress based health issues down the road.
The above said. You have a nice day now.

This exactly. OP has their head so far up their ass about this they refuse to acknowledge that the cyclist was also culpable here.
I’m accepting what was said at face value as it sounds probable. It’s clear that OP did not actually understand the article and assuming they read it, they were already biased and can’t separate their personal feelings from the facts being presented.

Cars will be part of our world for a very long time. Most cities are not designed for cycling, walking, etc. Plus the trucks and other vehicles that are needed to get food to stores, move our shit from one house to another, etc. You can’t have a society built only on cycling, walking etc. I’ll also remind you of parts of the world where the weather is not conducive to cycling except for when you want to abuse yourself.
I’m all for areas like downtowns being off limits to cars but that’s not going to work for those who live 20 minutes by car from civilization. I currently live in the outskirts of my main city and there is no way I or my wife would be able to do any real grocery shopping on a bike. We live 6 miles from 2 different foodlions and it’s down roads that are not safe for walking or biking.

Can we get the hyperbole out of here? If OP had actually read (and understood) the article they would have seen it was one of those confluence of events that no one could see coming. As soon as the car detected the cyclist it hit the brakes and the cyclist had minor injuries.
Basically, this car didn’t mow anyone down and did exactly what it was designed to do and attempted not to hit anyone.

It also sounds like it’s a situation that even a human driver wouldn’t have been able to avoid. Until the tech can see around corners and through solid objects, this kind of thing is still likely to happen regardless of who or what is driving.

Definitely yes. I’m amazed (but not surprised) by the lack of understanding of this concept.
I suggest that everyone here play around with mirrors and learn something themselves.
I’ll leave you with this. Why do mirrors work to see around corners when you are trying to not be seen?
This might help explain things.

It probably helps that I have a couple of things in my favor.
The phone number that gets those texts/calls the most has an area code I’ve never lived in. When I needed a new direct line I chose a Florida area code because I grew up there but I’ve never lived in the 727.
It’s in my work phone at the moment and tmobile has some pretty good spam filtering.
I’m happy to share my long term strategy to deal with spam calls/texts but every time I have I get pushback from the peanut gallery.
I have something like 6 numbers, probably soon to be 7 when I add a number to our family Gmail account. I get very very little spam across all of my numbers and the ones I do get are either the flippers, election shit or someone looking for someone who used to have that number.

Even when you can see their eyes that isn’t always the case. It depends on how sharp the angle is and where you and they are relatively speaking. You can definitely see their eyes without them seeing you.

Play around with mirrors and learn something.

I’ve been known to text them back some very very NSFW images. That tends to put a stop to it (until the next batch of wannabe flippers gets that number).

It depends on the angle. There are definitely times you can see someone/something but they can’t see you.

Exactly. That’s my point. He deserves our thanks and appreciation not our ire and constant judging of everything he does. I would take Biden drooling and staring off into space over anything the right has offered over the past few decades.
Even if Bidens 2nd term does nothing to move us forward that’s better than moving backwards under trump or whoever putin wants installed as king.

This right here. I’m 43 and don’t remember birthdays or death days for most of my family. I also have to think things through to remember at times. I also have problems recalling specific words at random ass times, for example I wouldn’t be able to bring up the word “table” but could tell you about fermis paradox, another time it would be “sidewalk” that my brain could be assed to remember.
Biden is old and should be retired somewhere on the beach. He chose to run again because he knew we needed to get rid of trump, remember that, he chose to run again. Now he is the only thing standing between democracy and another large step into fascism with a future dictator.

Can we get Samaritan? I’d love to join the fight against it.
Damn, now it’s time for a re-watch.
I’m not assuming anything. I’m going on the presumption that they will do what they will do and that politicians are going to be similar regardless of country or tax laws, etc.
It’s also clear that as I said, you have no idea how these companies operate. They will find a way to fuck the workers over as much as possible.
As I said and you clearly missed. I’m a so called gig worker except I’m making an actual job out of it. I refuse to do the food deliveries because I can’t see how they make any money after the time and mileage invested. I drive uber, empower and I am building my own service. I’ve also been self employed most of my working life and I know how these companies operate.
If you can prove that Canada is somehow impervious to what they have done everywhere since these companies have existed, I’ll move asap. For example, if I’m not mistaken, California has similar laws on the books and I am fairly certain that uber and lyft include tips in the hourly min. They will probably do similar up your way unless your law makers are some how much smarter and tougher than ours and thought through the possible ways they could work this law.
The above said. I’m done here. I’m tired of talking chess while you assume we were going to play chutes and ladders.
