I feel like there’s an additional intent there. Short bursts of dopamine in quick succession are a pretty addicting drug, and thus making people more distracted and sedated, and if they don’t have ADHD, they may get the same focus troubles people with ADHD have.

If you must consume those, I strongly advise to at least redirect to places autoplay or replay isn’t triggered. In Youtube’s case, there are browser plugins for redirecting, yt-dlp, mobile and PC players, etc.

And expanding a bit, since it’s not a problem exclusive to Google…

For TikTok and Odysee, I don’t consume their short-format videos so can’t comment on those. And for Loops, part of the fediverse, watching externally, e.g. on Mastodon, should give the video in a plain form, without the addicting features.

Besides here, might I suggest participating in other forums? Some times they get highlighted at !Forums@sh.itjust.works, but they’re still way more plentiful that what gets curated there from my experience. Also if you must still consume contents from Reddit, they still have RSS for the time being.

A bit of an exercise on futurology, but from what I skimmed on the promotional materials, this remake seems to be inspired in the recent open world Zelda games. If that’s the case indeed, I’d presume that the controls would work as well.

Bots and bot-like figures that post to communities I’ve been blocking, as well as domains that I find to not aggregate much and that are posted to communities. GTA6 noise coming to my feed then becomes minimal, and I’d suggest the same then.

If I may suggest, already start finding alternatives where those you follow are. Helps with both timeouts, and at making less painful to stop using Youtube altogether if/when the need comes.

If you mean “how do I monetize to keep services afloat”, open donation channels, like Patreon, Ko-fi, direct donations like the American Zelle or the Brazilian Pix, referral links explicitly identified as such, etc., and be transparent about finances and that if someone likes the service, their support helps maintaining it.

Been using for some 2~3 years now a Nitro 5 laptop almost always set to the Nvidia GPU. Issues are very rare, and some times compatibility is actually better than with the other GPU, the Intel one. Also worth noting I use Linux Mint though, and been some years since I last tested systems based Arch (btw).

Windows VM? Was able to convert files for the PS3 through that already, though never tried decrypting specifically.

Every 1~2 years there is a new source of mob mentality, some times a few. AI seems to be the one of the newer ones. So I wouldn’t sweat too much on downvotes for not being automatically against AI.

Tempted to run the RSS feeds just for each community I follow, to see how many I get in a fresh instance of my reader. But qualitative instead of quantitative, I can notice pretty much every week I have to unfollow some group because it’s too much to keep track of.

Isn’t Lemmy older than 6 years though? Dunno on the federation aspect, but sorting posts on Lemmy instances by oldest first shows a few older posts.

Still, by the time these oldest posts were made, Reddit was already some 10 years old to my knowledge, and we can’t even be sure if their active users’ numbers are real due to lack of transparency and these numbers coming from a single source instead of being a sum of several independent ones.

And at least an impression of mine, but in these ~4 years I’ve been around, engagement seems to be growing slowly but steadily. And I’d need to put on a graph the data shared about the growth of the fediverse from another community, but the numbers overall seem to be growing there too.

On taking down Reddit, I’d advise against it. Competition is what lets products and services improve. What I’d expect in an organic competition, however, is for Reddit to deflate into a shadow of its former self, keeping only a nicher usefulness, like Tumblr did and thus becoming just another forum.

Iirc “spam” comes from a skit from Monty Python criticizing how prevalent the brand was, to the point it felt like it was everywhere.

But unlike a product in the market, posts are easier to tackle. If the poster/reposter becomes an annoyance, the user just needs to block or, depending on the software and desire, mute the poster/reposter. If just certain domains are an annoyance, block the domain either natively if possible, or with extensions, scripts and/or filters. If just specific posts are a problem, voting and/or hiding posts can be done.

So imo, while the volume can be a tad annoying, if the annoyed users do use the features provided by the platform or more extremely by extensions, these posts shouldn’t become the meme of Monty Python’s joke on the canned food.

By this reasoning, the rate limiting added to PieFed recently-ish starts making far more sense. Not what you propose and not Rimu’s reasoning that I’d seen, but should also help decreasing the acceleration of resources consumption.

UE games looks rubbery/plastic to me since at least the PS3, the point which I started paying attention. No matter how good a dev is, sadly I can’t hold hopes for such a promise.

Licenses are far older than digital contents, and the PS Vita, which I wonder which is the company behind it, gave a concrete example that consoles can make backups, and that’s halfway there.

Furthermore, another platform, GOG, explicitly states in its service contract that users are allowed to keep the contents they get. Similarly, when the service was active, Humble Bundle’s Humble Trove explained right at the beginning of its page that games included in the selection were free to be kept once downloaded. Two examples of decently-sized for-profit companies allowing for digital ownership.

Also even if there is a decent overlap, appearing as 55th biggest in MAU among all softwares on FediDB, not being the immediate result in most searches should be good. I’d expect people to choose if not the first, then at least one of the first instances they find, so other instances appearing in searches helps spreading out, and thus not making a specific one disproportionally big.
