When I was a kid I bought an Atari with the cartridge holder stand for it and a ton of games for $5. ET was fucking awful, but there were a few gems in the collection.

I think that really depends on your perspective. I’ve spent most of my career in C or a minimal subset of C++ for embedded systems. For me, even no_std rust has a rather rich set of features.

How else would I do a firmware update of my books? I wouldn’t want to trust wifi for such a large collection. ;)

Seriously though, the real answer is that fiber internet comes into the house on the far left side of the library wall, which also makes a decent place to keep the router so that wifi can reach all of the front upstairs of the house.

Directly beneath this room is a room that we use an a home office. When I moved in there was an old phone jack on the far right side of the wall with a cut phone cable running down to the office. I pulled that and replaced it with Ethernet to the office, and then also from there put in runs to the den for the TV/media setup and the back of the house for wifi extender backhaul.

Back to the bookshelf, I don’t know what I’m going to find when I pull the trim to do the install, as this is a 120 year old house. By adding the conduit I can hide the Ethernet run across the room in the base if it won’t be an easy run through the wall. Also by going with conduit I can easily upgrade it in the future with fiber or whatever if/when CAT6 isn’t enough. I’m going to put a lower door on the left and right most bookcase sections so that I can hide the networking equipment in the left and whatever else in the right.

This and that. This is a new shop in my new house, which is a 120 year old Queen Anne. So I’m mostly going to be using it for home repairs and small construction. Previously I’ve done a lot of armor building and repair for SCA armored combat, medieval camping gear, gardening projects, general home maintenance and small appliance repair.

My current project list is:

1. Floor to ceiling wall to wall bookcase, with ladder
2. Windows seat/bookshelf for younger daughters room
3. Moulding to hide some cables downstairs
4. Better bike storage
5. Repair back deck
6. Goth armoires for older daughter
7. Trim out newly installed closets
8. Better under stairs storage x2
9. Cabinet lighting in kitchen

It’s complicated and I recommend a full listen to the episode, but the big two reasons are:

1. The cost of building out all the new infrastructure is partially paid for by the data centers, but the majority is paid by all customers.
2. The demand for electricity is growing much faster than supply can be built.

Those two, combined with the deregulation in most markets, has meant that the price for everyone is going up.
