I mostly use my fire tab for reading comics/manga and books. I used Fire tools or whatever it’s called to de-amazon the tablet but I’d like something a little more snappier and non Amazon in general. Maybe even a little bigger screen size? I have a 400gb sd card in it to save all my books etc.
Have you thought of a detachable Chromebook like Lenovo duet 3? usually it goes on sale.

Yep. But you can install Android apps on it.

While I’m sure you can buy better models, they are usually tablet-level hardware in a laptop form factor which could be exactly what you want in this case.
Try it and if you don’t like, you can always return. I tried once and loved the experience and stuck with it. I have duet 5 though. I mainly use it for ebook reading and media consumption.
They’re nice. Probably what an android tablet should resemble more.

Lowest I’ve seen is around $280
My gf and I had the exact same use case, and decided on Galaxy A7 Lite tablets. They’re perfect for exactly what we want to use them for, which is reading ebooks through ReadEra and reading manga/comics through Tachiyomi. $120 at Amazon.
You get what you pay for - the browser and even some of the UI is a little crunchy, but watching YouTube Revanced or streaming from our Jellyfin server work just fine, and for reading it’s perfect.

Samsung’s implementation of their Android skin is still pretty jank on their tablets. I wouldn’t call it explicitly worse than stock, but enough things are done differently that it’s noticeable.
What’s the price range you’re looking at?

I recently got a Lenovo P11+ and really like it.
I just got an Alldocube Iplay50mini, aka Kidz_PadPro, from geekbuying. It was 120$ Canadian, so under 100$ USD, and much faster than my Kindle Fire 10. It has a few things I really like, like the power plug on the top instead of on the bottom so I can use it while it syncs and charges. LTE works for Canadian cell carriers and T-Mobile. Came with a decent case and a garbage Bluetooth keyboard. I was surprised by how much I like it.

Yes. I have a 128gb in it, I don’t know if it is compatible with larger cards. It’s a combo tray, so it can take one sim and one sd, or two sims.
On the extremely cheap side, I’ve read that the Lenovo Tab M8 is now at $79. It has pretty weak specs (MediaTek A22 chip, 2GB of RAM, 8 inch display) but I assume if it’s just for reading it should do the job?EDIT: definitely not an upgrade from the Fire 8+

Sorry disregard my comment, it is definitely not an upgrade.
The Lenovo P11+ suggested below has a better CPU than the Fire 8+ (see https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/cpu-mediatek_helio_g90t vs https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/cpu-mediatek_mt8169a for benchmarks) and more RAM (4GB for the P11+ vs the 2GB of the Fire 8+).
Digging my Galaxy Tab and Samsung has a variety of models, sizes, and specs to choose from.
